Why are we here? Lifelong learners, thoughtful citizens and caring people: Discuss, evaluate and reflect on what they value. Engage in moral and ethical thinking Practice developing an ethical mind. Just like speed training improves track performance, ethical thinking skills can be developed & improved through practice.

Objectives I will reflect on what I value most. I will discuss values to build understanding, to engage with difference and to probe my own perspective. I will know what I value most so I can respond to opportunities and conflicts with integrity.

Today’s Main Event Wes Moore visits this Thursday. He suggests there are moments & people in a young person’s life that shape who that person becomes. Today we have an opportunity to reflect on values and choices to better understand ourselves & one another.

Value Sort Each of you will have pack of 30 cards; each card has a value inscribed. Please do not mix your pack of cards with another student’s pack! The NEXT slide will give directions and column headings.

Directions: Sort each value card into one of 5 columns to reflect on the relative importance to you. You do not have column headings with your cards, pretend & arrange your cards like the model below:

Value Sort Reflection and Sharing 1.What was the easiest to sort? What was most difficult? Why? 2.Share with a partner one of your “Most Important” values and explain why you think it is “Most Important”. What about “Least Important? 3.Look at all of our data. What do you notice? 4.Is there anything that surprises you? 5.Why do you think we see the differences we see?

Reflection On the back of your evaluation note card, please write answers to the following: 1.To what extent do your own values drive your decision- making? 2.Why do values matter? Why did we spend time ranking and discussing them? 3.What can you do this week to act in alignment with your values? Give a specific example. Ethical thinking skills must be honed and practiced; flex that muscle!
