Lesson 1: People Live in Communities (pp. 12-15) A community is a group of people who live or work together in the same place. People live in communities to belong, work, and to have fun. Many people live near work Businesses make or sell goods. Goods are things that can be bought and sold.

Lesson 2: People Work at Many Jobs (pp. 16-19) The different jobs that people do help all citizens meet their needs. People have different skills. Turn and talk to your partner about some of the different skills people use on their jobs. For example: some people are able to grow and sell food. A service is work that someone does for someone else. Do you know some places where people can learn? School! Library!

Lesson 3: Many People, One Community (pp. 22-25) Culture- the customs and beliefs of a group. There are many different ethnic groups in a community. Each ethnic group brings part of their tradition into the community. Clothing Music Language Art Food Holidays

Lesson 4: People Getting Along (pp. 26-29) People need to cooperate to keep their community a safe and peaceful place to live. Rules that a community makes are called laws. Laws have consequences. Consequences are what happens because of what a person does. - getting hurt - paying a fine - going to jail

Lesson 4 continued… The leader of a community is the mayor. Do you know who your mayor is? Judges are leaders in the courts. Judges must treat everyone fairly. Citizens should understand and obey the laws.
