M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Only two years away 50th Anniversary of the Particle Data Group
4
M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 In the past two years Particle Data Group has been greatly strengthened by two vital appointments: Juerg Beringer and Piotr Zyla The Berkeley group now has three outstanding young physicists and an outstanding editor/physicist plus four experienced and devoted retirees (and me). This new team successfully produced RPP, the booklet, and the website. Great progress is being made in many areas. There are no crises!

M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 The Web allows us to see which portions of RPP most interest our readers. In practice, the hits on the Data Listings and on the Reviews are almost exactly equal. Clearly people care about both. Listings and Reviews
16
M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Public Access to the RPP Database This portion of the PDG Computing Upgrade has been largely completed. Work by the IHEP Protvino group: Vladimir Ezhela, Slava Lugovsky, Vitaly Lugovsky, Kirill Lugovsky, Lyudmila Lugovskaya working together with Juerg Beringer and Piotr Zyla. This is an outstanding accomplishment, providing unique, valuable, convenient access to information in our database. And it is fun to explore!

M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Appendix (July 29, 2003) Your recommendations and our actions 1. CKM matrix elements. Requested a review of V_td. Asked for more detail on V_ud and V_us suggesting these details could be in the reviews on baryon decay parameters and strange hadron decays. It seems too early for V_td since there is no B_s mixing measurement yet. No V_ud and V_us details yet. Wouldn't they be lost in these other reviews? 2. CP Violation. We have mostly addressed this.
19
M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Appendix Your recommendations and our actions 3. Neutrino Physics. Asked for a single neutrino review including the current review plus the two-flavor review, a brief theoretical discussion of Majorana neutrinos and double beta decay. Everything done. Boris's mini-review was promoted to full review, and now it includes Hitoshi's two-flavor plots, a discussion of Majorana neutrinos and of double-beta decay. We keep a separate review of double-beta decay with the more experimental aspects. 4. Quark model and hadron spectroscopy. Asked for a new modern update. Amsler wrote a greatly revised review. Referees had many comments which Amsler addressed.
20
M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Appendix Your recommendations and our actions 5. Cross sections. Requested new modern formulae. Not done. The current author said it was too much work. Will need a new author. 6. Heavy Ions. Asked for a review. Consulted with experts in the four BNL experiments, but we never agreed on author(s) so it never got done. We need to address this issue for RPP06.
21
M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Appendix Your recommendations and our actions 7. Particle Detectors. Asked for a section on RPCs, photon detection, plus updates on three types of calorimeters, plus an update on Cerenkov detectors. a. RPC's. Groom did considerable work to find an author, who readily agreed and then didn't answer email. Is this is still important? b. Photon detectors. Groom has been trying to find an appropriate author for several editions. There are many experts on one narrow part of it, like the TMAE detecors in RICH, but he still hasn't found the right person. Two new leads: Ekhart Lorenz, and Pasquale Lubrano. He will pursue this quickly.
22
M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Appendix Your recommendations and our actions 7. Particle Detectors. Asked for a section on RPCs, photon detection, plus updates on three types of calorimeters, plus an update on Cerenkov detectors. c. A replacement for the EM Cal section (which most needed replacement) has been written by Ren Yuan Zhu of Caltech. Groom says it is excellent. He says the Hadronic calorimeter section will be upgraded. d. Update on Cerenkov detectors. This resulted in two basically new reviews, one on accelerator-type Cerenkovs by Blair Ratcliff and another on underground detectors by Dave Casper.
23
M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Appendix Your recommendations and our actions 8. Miscellaneous: a) Fragmentation: Requested that lepton-hadron scattering results be included. Not done. The review was already written when the recommendations came out. The current authors declared themselves incompetent to tackle this. We decided to wait until RPP06. b) GUT review: Requested a new figure. Figure was not added, because no one told Stuart Raby. My fault.
24
M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Appendix Your recommendations and our actions 8. Miscellaneous: c) Structure functions: Requested photon structure functions be included. Done. d) Quark Masses: QCD sum rules should be added. I did not inform Manohar and Sachrajda, so did not get done. e) SUSY: Requested three figures. Perhaps not communicated to authors.

M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Survey on Big Book Survey on Whether to Discontinue the Full-Size-Book Version of RPP December 2000 THE QUESTION: Is having a copy of the full-sized book essential to your work or study? Choose one only. Yes, it is essential. Having the full-size book is useful, but I could live without it. No, I do not need it. 2450 TOTAL Responses 2450. 1226 also provided comments

M. Barnett – Nov. 2004 Summary of Comments Survey is Biased? You should send it out on paper - otherwise the results will be biased toward web users. It is like doing a telephone survey to find out how many people use telephones. *** Comments AGAINST producing the book *** I only use web version and booklet. I need only the web version. Save trees. *** Comments FOR producing the book *** Can live without it, but… Convenience-- second monitor Poor web access Access for travel, home, etc. Browsing is superior for book Intense, focused use Time-saving Better for students Bookmarks, notes in margin Print anyway Serendipity, random reading Archiving - cultural heritage Health Global view Readability for vision impaired Reference and authors Figures usability
