14 System 3000 + SBP The Physics of (Any) SBP: How Deep Can You Go?
The sub-bottom profiler (SBP) requires a water medium to work effectively. Thus, the greater the porosity of the medium, the better the penetration. That means that materials such as very fine sand and silt, which are as an environment highly porous and readily allow water to flow through the entire medium, will have excellent penetration. So, areas such as glacial silt deposits are perfect for SBP. On the other end, non-porous materials such as stone, rock, and packed clay, which do not allow water to flow through them, result in a highly attenuated signal, and have very poor penetration. Similarly, highly coarse sand and/or gravel demonstrate the same effect, as water is trapped by them without the opportunity for "conductivity". Here is a good estimate: Fine sand, silt = 40m-50m penetration (perhaps even better). Hard clay, rock (“compacted, consolidated sediments”) or sediment that has gas or microbubbles = <10m (could be as low as 0m). And yes, it really can vary that dramatically. A mixture of silt and clay will depend on the hardness of the clay. In our estuarine environments here in New Hampshire, the clay is very soft, which would still allow good penetration. The wet sand should also give very good penetration.

15 System 3000 + SBP Competitive Attacks: Klein Response:
Other has 2-20 kHz Don’t need above 8 kHz. In fact Competitor uses several bands for different penetrations. The higher ones (>8 kHz) are for high resolution at very shallow depths only. The best deep penetration, such as for the geotechnical market, uses frequencies below 8 kHz. >95% of all applications use <8kHz.
