Lesson Objectives Circular Motion Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
2
How do you stay in? Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
3
What is the difference between SPEED and VELOCITY? Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
4
What is the difference between SPEED and VELOCITY? VELOCITY is an objects SPEED in a GIVEN DIRECTION. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
5
What is happening (at constant speed): - The velocity is directed to the tangent of the circle. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
6
What is happening: - The velocity changes direction as it moves around. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
7
What is happening: - The change in velocity is towards the centre of the circle. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
8
If the object is constantly changing its velocity, therefore it is said to be ACCELERATING towards the centre of the circle – called centripetal acceleration. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
9
Therefore, resultant force is towards the centre of the circle – called centripetal force. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
10
Other examples: -Car going around a roundabout -Satellite going around the Earth -Hammer thrower at the Olympics Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
11
Other examples: -Car going around a roundabout – centripetal force is due to friction between tyres and road. -Satellite going around the Earth. -Hammer thrower at the Olympics. -Fairground ride centripetal force at the top is due to weight. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
12
What affects the centripetal force? -Speed = faster the object, the greater the centripetal force needed. -Radius = centripetal force increases as radius decreases. Harder to keep an object in a circle with a SMALL radius. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
13
Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
14
Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
15
PAST PAPER QUESTIONS Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
16
Are you now able to…. I still feel unsure. I need some more help to understand. I feel ok. I need to do some more work to check my understanding. I am happy and feel I understand and can explain the main points. Keywords: centripetal force; centripetal acceleration; To know what is meant by circular motion Grade C To describe centripetal acceleration Grade B To be able explain the factors which affect centripetal force Grade A
