WHAT IS DIATOMS Diatoms is a major group of eukaryotic algae. and are one of the most common types phytoplankton. Diatoms form intricately patterned shells made of silica a glass like substance.

WHAT HAPPENEDS WHEN DIATOMS DIE When diatoms die their shells settle to the ocean floor. Humans harvest fossilized deposits of these shells to make detergents, fertilizers, paint remover, and insulators.
