3 Facts about Drug Abuse According to the NIDA & NIAAA, During 1992 the total economic cost on Drugs was $245.7 billion 97.7 billion was due to drug abuse

4 Drugs and their effects Stimulants Stimulants...speed up your CNS, causing sleeplessness, dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, sweating. example Cocaine, Crack, Ice, Amphetamines Addictions can develop after first use. Death can result from overdose.

6 Drugs and their effects Depressants Depressants...Slow down the CNS, used to relax muscle, relieve tension and worry example Barbiturates, Tranquilizers, Valium, Alcohol can result in physiological and psychological dependence over time.

7 Drugs and their effects Narcotics Narcotics...cause drowsiness, decreased alertness, confusion, stupor, nausea and possibly death. Medically they are used to relieve pain and suffering. Examples Codeine, Heroin, Morphine, Opium, Methadone Addictions develop over a period of continued use.

9 Drugs and their effects Hallucinogens Hallucinogens...they alter mood, thought and senses. Examples PCP, LSD,Mushrooms Known to be the most dangerous of drugs because of their effects on individuals. Flashbacks are common years after use, some even end up in mental institutions.

10 Drugs and their effects Marijuana Marijuana...it has the characteristics of a hallucinogen, stimulant and a depressant. THC is the chemical responsible for the effects it gives. It is stored in the fatty tissues of the body which acts as a poison. It prevents the proper development of cell growth in areas of the body. The amount of Tar in one joint is equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes Marijuana Marijuana...it has the characteristics of a hallucinogen, stimulant and a depressant. 12 Drugs and their effects Inhalants Inhalants...substances with fumes which are inhaled to give a hallucinogenic effect. They depress the CNS and produce the same effects as alcohol. Usually they sniff glue, gasoline, paints, aerosols. Death can result from overuse.

Illegally they are used to enhance an athletes Side effects Heart disease, liver damage, stroke, high blood pressure, acne, baldness, decreased size of sex organs, etc...

20 Stages of Addiction 1. First use/occasional use… social setting, first time, stress relief 2. Occasional Trouble with drug… mood swings, greater tolerance then others 3. Regular use of drug… tolerance increases, tries to control but cant, denies problem 4. Multiple drug use… combine or switch drug for stronger effect 5. Increasing Dependency… needs drug to function, drug does not have same effect, lose interest in things. 6. Total Dependency… Suffers from major loss, ROCK BOTTOM
