8. The Boxers were a radical anti-imperialist (Western & Japanese) movement in China from 1899-1901. In June 1900, Boxer fighters, convinced they were invulnerable to foreign weapons, converged on Beijing. Foreigners and Chinese Christians sought refuge in Beijing’s “Legation Quarter”. After initial hesitation, Empress Cixi supported the Boxers & declared war on the foreign powers. Thousands of Chinese Christians and foreigners were killed. An 8 nation alliance was formed to fight the Boxers… this quickly captured Beijing and lifted the siege on the legation quarter. A massive financial penalty (2x China’s GDP!) and other harsh terms were forced on China in the resulting peace treaty. 义和团义和团
