Introduction to the Chemical Biology Program Chulabhorn Graduate Institute June 5 th, 2012
2
Chemical Biology Emphasizes the interface between Chemistry and Biology, as well as its potential applications for other fields Involves the study of interactions between small molecules and their possible biological targets, the study of biological pathways using chemical tools, drug delivery, as well as chemical understanding of disease states, in order to create basic science knowledge for future drug discovery efforts 2

Courses Students may choose one of the two tracks in either Chemistry or Biology, depending on the strength of their previous training and experience. Students must take 5 required courses and 3-4 electives. Required courses include: – Principles of Applied Biosciences: Systems Biology – Experimental Strategies for Biological Problems – Drug Discovery and Development – Spectroscopic Methods for Organic Compounds and Biomolecules – Case Studies in Applied Biosciences (Biology-track students) – Advanced Organic Chemistry (Chemistry-track students) Electives may be selected from a number of chemistry-oriented courses offered in this program and the courses from the ET or ABS programs. 4
5
Research Areas Organic Synthesis/Medicinal Chemistry – Development of synthetic methodologies – Total synthesis of complex natural products Natural Products Chemistry – Extraction, isolation, purification, and structure elucidation of natural products from plants, marine organisms, and microorganisms Chemistry and Biology of Biomolecules – Application of integrated and multidisciplinary approaches to solve problems involving biomolecules, especially proteins and carbohydrates 5
