Section 1 The Nature of Science
2
Science is a process 1 st investigate/research a problem 2 nd experiment 3 rd observe the outcome 4 th test the results again
3
Natural Science Chemistry Biological Science Study of Living world EcologyBotony Zoology Physical Sciences Study of Energy And Matter Earth Science Study of the Earth Physics Geology Earth Science Meteorology Many other Branches
4
OLOGY- means the study of …. Physical science is the study of matter and energy.
5
2 branches of physical science are Chemistry * the study of what substances are made of and how they combine and change Physics * the study of forms of energy and the laws of motion
6
Observe the world around them Question why things are that way Seek out answers to problems Look for basic truths/ facts Some of Leonardo da Vinci’s ideas could not be built until twentieth century technology developed. Some examples are: a design for a parachute and a design for a glider.
7
Science- goal is to gain knowledge about the natural world Technology- goal is to apply science to solve problems
8
Law- observation of nature, summary of a natural event and has been tested repeatedly. Can be used to make predictions, accepted as the truth.
9
Theory- logical explanations for events of nature. They must explain observations clearly The experiment must be repeatable
10
You must be able to make a prediction from the theory. We continue to test laws and theories for any changes
11
Qualitative – an unbiased observation that is described in words. Quantitative – using numbers
12
Models are representations of an object or event that can be studied so you can understand the real deal
13
A = l x w Area = (length) x (width)
