2 SOAPS Speaker- Who is delivering the message? What is their point of view? What is their position in society? Occasion-When is it being delivered or written? What is the significance of the time period? What events occurred around the same time as the document? Audience- For whom is it intended? What kind of document is it? How does this type of document impact the audience? Purpose- Why was it created? What effect is it intended to produce in the audience? Summary-What is it all about? What is the significance of the document?

3 Historical Fingerprinting Island- What makes it UNIQUE, or SPECIAL? 5-W’s What is Context of the document & its relation to the immediate historical circumstances? Core-What is the main point of the document? What are its key arguments? Crossover Bifurcation Island- What makes it UNIQUE, or SPECIAL? (5-W’s) What is Context of the document & its relation to the immediate historical circumstances?

4 Historical Fingerprinting Crossover- How are the ideas in the document related to other ideas you are familiar with? What connections to the past and future could be made with this document? What things do you need to know to understand this document?

5 Historical Fingerprinting Bifurcation-How can the people, issues, and ideas in the document be considered ‘hybrids’ or how can they fit into 2 or more categories at once?

6 ESP Economic, Social, & Political Significance of the Document: Include analyses of the Issues, Persons, and Ideas presented in the document. ESP can also be used as an inquiry strategy to identify the significance of people, events, ideas, and issues. An integral strategy in understanding the ‘Big Picture’ and in answering DBQs and FRQs
