1
MAJOR LAKES AND RIVERS BY BLAKE AND JENNIFER AP ENVIRONMENTAL - Congo River and Lake Erie
2
CONGO There is approximately 90 Inches of rain per year. It is hot and humid with tropical rainforests surrounding most of it. Second largest river in the world in terms of volume.
3
CONGO PRODUCERS Barnyard grass Papyrus Sedge CONSUMERS Elephantfish Cichlids Characins Lungfish Killifish Upside-down catfish
4
HUMAN IMPACT OVERFISHING- TRADITIONAL METHODS OF FISHING COUPLED WITH THE USE OF DEFOLIANTS, EXPLOSIVES, POISONS, AND ILLEGAL NETS. INTRODUCTION OF NON-NATIVE SPECIES TO THE RIVER NOTHING SPECIFICALLY CONCERNING THE RIVER IS BEING DONE TO PROTECT IT, BUT MUCH OF THE FORESTS SURROUNDING THE RIVER ARE PROTECTED.
5
NATURAL CAPITAL Supports over 700 species of aquatic animals, with many of them being endemic. Drains much of Central Africa. Hydroelectric power– two dams have been built. Scientists fear the building of more dams will lead to the extinction of many of the river’s species.
6
LAKE ERIE Frequent rain and snow Usually very windy Sometimes freezes over in the winter Shallowest and fourth largest of the Great Lakes
7
LAKE ERIE PRODUCERS Red Maple Red Oak Black Gum Cottonwood White Pine CONSUMERS Steelhead Walleye Smallmouth Bass Perch Sturgeon
8
HUMAN EFFECTS Eutrophication due to large amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen being released from agriculture. Lake Erie Protection Fund- money goes to projects aimed at better management of the lake’s resources and environment.
9
NATURAL CAPITAL Hydroelectric power– Niagara Falls Wind-- Electricity from wind turbines Source of freshwater.
