Interesting facts Sea otters are cute and cuddly looking with friendly faces and playful personalities. By 1910 it was thought that sea otters were extinct. Northern sea otters live in the waters off Alaska and Russia live in healthy numbers of approximately 168,000. Sea otters are the largest members of the weasel family.

Life cycle Female otters have one to five babies at a time. The babies are born about two months after mating. Babies may stay with their mom for a year.

Adaptations Their whiskers help feel vibrations in the water. Sea otters have extremely flexible spines. to get around the surface, sea otters swim on there backs. Sea otters can quite well, and they hold their small ears upright at the surface to listen for danger.

Inherited traits Otters measures 35 to 53 inches and 89 to 135 centimeters from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail. They can stay underwater for 4 minutes. As they dive, they close their ears and nostrils to keep water out.

Habitat The sea otter lives in the ocean. Otters are great swimmers and divers. They eat fish or other water animals. Otters live near rivers. some live near lakes and streams.
