1 JAMES K. POLK Tennessean James K. Polk accomplished much during his single term as America's eleventh president. He acquired more than a million square miles of land for the United States. He lowered the tariff on goods that were imported into the U.S. He oversaw the process under which the first U.S. postage stamp was issued. The U.S. government formed a naval academy. Historians consider Polk to have been the last "strong" American president before the Civil War.

2 A statue of Nancy Ward NANCY WARD She was born as a member of the Cherokee tribe sometime around 1738, and at that time her name was Nan’yehi. As a young woman she took part in battles against other Native American tribes, and largely because of this she became a leader within the Cherokee nation. But she could also be a peacemaker, and at one point she spared the life of a captured white woman. Nancy Ward's grave, in Polk County Later, as European settlers took over parts of Tennessee, she began to blend into the white world, and she became known as Nancy Ward. As an elderly lady she ran a hotel, or inn, in Polk County. Today there is a monument to her there.

3 Davy Crockett Elected into both the Tennessee Legislature and the US House of Representatives. Crockett was against the “Indian Removal Act”. Crockett lost his life during the Battle at the Alamo

4 John Sevier United States Representative John Sevier was an American soldier, frontiersman and politician. Tennessee’s first governor. Known as “Father of Tennessee” The only governor of State of Franklin. Helped defeat British in the Battle of Kings Mountain.

5 Sequoyah Developed 1 st written language for Cherokee.

6 Sam Houston Governor of Tennessee and Texas. He is best known for his leadership in bringing Texas into the United States.

7 Andrew Jackson Seventh President. Nicknamed “Old Hickory”. Elected Tennessee’s First congressman.
