PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020 ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Alzheimer’s is NOT normal aging; it’s a progressive, fatal, no-fault brain disease. There is a new case of Alzheimer’s disease in the U.S. every 68 seconds. Of Americans aged 65 and over, 1 in 8 has Alzheimer’s, and nearly half of people aged 85 and older have the disease.

PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020 ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE FACTS Fewer than 50 percent of people with Alzheimer’s receive a diagnosis. Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America without a way to prevent, cure, or even slow down its progression. 237,441 Minnesotans caring for someone with Alzheimer’s in 2011 provided unpaid care valued at 3.2 billion.
7
PREPARE MINNESOTA FOR ALZHEIMER’S 2020 ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE FACTS Without change, the total cost of care for Americans age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease will increase five-fold: from $172 billion to 1.08 trillion, per year. In Minnesota alone, these costs could reach $20 billion, most of that being Medicaid dollars.
