Polaroid SX-70 What it is The SX-70 was a folding single lens reflex Land Camera produced by the Polaroid Corporation in the 1970s. It was the first instant SLR in history, and the first camera to use Polaroid's new integral print film, which developed automatically without the need for intervention from the photographer - this was a revolution at the time, and a precursor to today's 600 and Spectra films. The SX-70 utilized a folding body design, a 4-element 116mm f/8 glass lens, and an automatic exposure system. The lens could be focused to a distance of 10.4 inches, and had shutter speeds ranging from 1/175 to more than 10 seconds. It was the: * First motorized Polaroid camera * First non-peel apart self-contained, self-developing film * First foldable SLR (single-lens reflex) design

Eames Shell Chair Who they were Few designers contributed more to mid-century design than Ray (1912-1988) and Charles (1907-1978) Eames. Married in 1948, Charles was an architect and Ray a painter and illustrator. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where Charles ran the Design Department. Charles was inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto and their use of organic forms. Aalto had also been experimenting with molded plywood, and had early successes in creating compound curves that fit the human body and mimicked those found in nature. In 1941, experiments with molded plywood lead to a contract with the U.S. Navy for plywood leg splints. What it is: Possibly the most easily recognizable of all the Eames chairs. Made of molded fiberglass, the shell chair could be dressed up with upholstery and wire legs (Eiffel tower base) or stripped down to its fiberglass shell with straight legs. There was even a rocking chair version.
