System requirements for GOLD Online Teaching Strategies GOLD online works on any PC (Windows XP SP2 or later) or Mac (OS X 10.6 or later) with a high-speed Internet connection (see Bandwidth Requirements below for details). The system works with the following web browsers: Apple Safari 6.0 or newer Google Chrome 26.0 or newer Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 or newer Mozilla Firefox 18.0 or newer

The Purpose of GOLD Assessment Primary Observe and document children’s development and learning over time Support, guide, and inform planning and instruction Identify children who might benefit from special help, screening, or further evaluation Report and communicate with family members and others

GOLD’s purpose continued Secondary Collect and gather child outcome information as one part of a larger accountability system Provide reports to administrators to guide program planning and professional development opportunities.

Logging into GOLD Go to www.teachingstrategies.comwww.teachingstrategies.com On the top right of the home page is “Log In” Put in your user name and your password If you forgot your password there is a way to get your password sent to your e-mail Click submit and you will get your dashboard

You’re in GOLD now Do you see the Teacher Quick-Start Guide to the right? Find where you can do the module training on your own to learn more about GOLD “The Sandbox” is a valuable tool

Getting started in GOLD 1. Dashboard -Gives you updates for your profile -What documentation is in the assessment -When your checkpoint is due -Alerts from Teacher Strategies 2. Market Place Tab -Shows if you have placed any orders 3. Communities Tab -Have discussions with other educators 4. Getting into the GOLD Assessment Click on the GOLD icon on the dashboard to get to the GOLD assessment itself. See the 6 tabs. Children Documentation Checkpoint Planning Communication Reports

Adding children/classrooms You need the children tab Start by clicking on the “Manage Classroom” words which moves the screen to “Add a class”. Give a class name Select Preschool Band and click Submit Click on add children Once you add children you can’t delete class until you delete the children

To add documentation Put in your date by clicking the calendar You can attach any documentation you want by clicking on the browse button and looking for the picture/scanned item in your computer. Then select objectives and dimension related to this evidence for each child Click save and you can see what you documented

GOLD TOOLS On-the –Spot Observation Recording Tool This is an optional tool to use Practical checklist that captures information about children quickly Streamlines the documentation process Use when you are involved with children and need to note a date when a behavior or skill was observed.

On the Spot Observation Recording Tool It is available on-line under the Documentation Tab Talk with your table about how you could use this tool in your classroom

Gold Tools Assessment Opportunity Cards These are optional 10 developmentally appropriate activities that can be integrated into everyday classroom Experiences to help teachers focus their observations on specific skills and collect specific information related to particular objectives

Assessment Opportunity Cards These cards are available on-line under the documentation tab, over to the right under “Resources” Get into groups of 2 or 3 and choose an activity card How could you use in this in your classroom?

Checkpoint This is where you enter your ratings for children in your class Checkpoint by one of 3 ways : Area Objective Child

More on Checkpoint by Area You can enter by clicking a box which takes you to the color progression Click on the link and scroll down to show documentation You click next dimension when done inputting and the information is automatically saved

Checkpoint by objective See the area-click the plus sign to expand the objective Class list on left, dimension on right Click on the objective to select level

Checkpoint by Child Click on the child’s name To change, click change on the side Select levels on the dimension You can move information before you finalize It is up to your program to finalize data Click on box to finalize or you can un-finalize There is support/resources on the side

Checkpoint by Child continued There are no developmental progressions for the areas: Science and Technology Art Social Studies Each program needs to develop their own criteria at this time

Planning Click on planning tab to get the weekly planning form which has the week, the project/study, who created it, and whether it has been submitted or not You can: edit the forms View/print the forms View print individual child planning Submit to administrator Archive Delete

Communication You can invite family members to join into GOLD so they can see their child’s progress There is an automatic letter you can send inviting parents to be a part of this system and giving parents the link to Teaching Strategies Teaching Strategies instructs parents on how to gain access to the GOLD Online

Messaging center If a child has a family member who has been accepted to receive classroom messages-they can receive the message. Gives families information of what is going on in the classroom.

Preparing for Conferences The Family Conference form is under the Communication Tab There are 2 tutorials to help you fill out the forms

The family conference form There are 3 parts to the family conference form: 1. Strengths in soc/emotional, physical, language, and cognitive development 2. Strengths in learning literacy, math, science and technology, social studies, and the arts 3. Plan for this child's development and learning

Reports There are a variety to use 3 types of “Quick reports” Class profile Individual child Development and learning-Recommended for parents

Using GOLD with students with disabilities The color coded age bands show typical development and that variation There are in-between steps for each progression to show emerging skills or need for more support For students with more severe disabilities, GOLD may not be the only assessment needed to determine programming

How will English-language learners be assessed using GOLD? A Home Language Survey -4 questions to complete. There is a tenth area of development and learning on English-language acquisition, 2 dedicated objectives in receptive and expressive language. Ability to assess dual-language learner's progress in Spanish oral language and literacy. Children are able to show what they know and can do in other areas of development and learning without the use of English e.g., counting in any language.
