Final Project Example

Step 1 – The Scenario A user commutes from New Jersey to Manhattan, NY each weekday for work. On his way to work while he is still in New Jersey he checks his work voicemail so that he can start returning calls while he is on the 1 hour train ride. Since this executive is new to the company they have not received a bill based upon his cell phone usage previously. His company receives a bill for $1000 after the first month’s usage of his corporate cell phone. The administrative assistant for his office has decided to appeal the bill and wants to know how they determined the costs for his usage.

Step 2 – Interpret the Problem Interpret the requirements of the problem and pose a question to be answered. (Research scientific method again if you do not recall how to do these steps). Interpret a real-world problem in a scientific manner that results in a properly worded question. Do all cell phone subscribers that commute from the executive’s location receive similar charges when calling the same area as the executive and what is this basis for the charge?

Step 3 – Develop Hypothesis Hypothesis: Mobile phone vendors are unable to accurately bill mobile calls placed from customers that are motion.

Step – 4 Identification of Control Group The executive whose bill is in question is the control group. He will not be part of the experiment but those being tested will be compared against his results.

Step 5 – Test the Hypothesis 1.Interview 10 or more commuters that enter the train from the same stop. 2.These commuters must also utilize their cell phones to call relatively the same location in Manhattan that the executive calls on a daily basis from the train for 30 days.

Test (continued) 3.Each commuter’s bill will be reviewed to verify that they are being charged similar rates, for the same call from relatively the same location that the train is in to relatively the same area in Manhattan, is being charged with some compensation for different wireless carriers. In addition, logs for 30 days from the vendors that show the location registered when the call is connected for each of the respondents in the test group will be compared.

Step 5 – Review Results Advise whether the hypothesis is supported and true or not supported and is false. Based upon the results from the testing I would then be able to verify whether the hypothesis was true Mobile vendors are unable to accurately bill mobile calls placed from customers that are motion.

Step 6 – Analyze the Results Describe the results of the analysis found from reviewing the bill and the logs provided to establish whether each of the test calls did iregister the same location when the call was connected disproving the hypothesis that the mobile companies do not reliably post location information for a user’s calls regardless to location whether they are in movement at the time.

Step 7 – Draw a Conclusion The bill was validated based upon the results of the study and the company owes the $1000 if the analysis of the results supported that the locations were reliably being recorded for the test subjects. Otherwise, ask that the charges be removed or updated based upon better methodology for tracking location etc.
