Africa Africa in the 1800s North Africa was mainly Muslim
Huge Hundreds of languages Many different governments Centralized states to small villages North Africa was mainly Muslim Started spreading to West and East Africa Trade routes South was run by the Zulu Kingdom

Resistance, geography, and disease kept them away During the early 1800s, explorers started traveling inward Did not understand the people Missionaries soon follow Urged them to give up their “degrading” lifestyle and join Christianity

Profit and trade Berlin Conference In order to avoid wars, many European Countries met to discuss Africa No Africans were invited In order to claim African land, they must have a government office put in place Exert their control over the existing government

Africa After Berlin Conference, Africa was claimed by many different European countries Belgium Controlled the Congo Copper, rubber and ivory France Algeria and beyond Britain Chunks of West and East Africa, Egypt, South Africa

Africa All European countries that took over did not include any African officials or traditions in the new government Lots of resistance Many Africans tried to fight off European powers, but were unsuccessful Ethiopia resisted
