Bioaccumulation Toxins in the body that break down slowly or not at all can accumulate or increase over time until the animal dies.

Biomagnification Small amounts of toxins in lower tropic levels can increase in amounts when food travels to higher trophic levels.

Toxins Toxin – Harmful or poisonous chemical or molecule DDT- “dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane” a pesticide that was sprayed to control bugs in the 1940’s- 1970’s. Dieldrin- pesticide, stored in the fat of animals higher up the food chain. Mercury – metallic element that can be harmful to ingest. Often found in top predatory fish.
