Lesson 5: Social Movements Part 2

 Cesar Chavez helped to organize a strike against table grape growers in 1965 Cesar Chavez  Wanted to have workers, many who were Mexican Americans, earn better wages and benefits  In 1966 Chavez was able to form the United Farm Workers under the AFL- CIO http://www.cesarechavezfoundation.org/_cms.php?mode=view&b_code=001013000 000000&b_no=1736&page=1&field=&key=&n=104

 In 1962 Rachel Carson, a biologist, wrote Silent Spring which decried the use of pesticides and their effects on the environment, focusing in on the use of DDT  Events such as Cleveland's Cuyahoga River catching fire helped spur the environmental movement (1969)

 In 1970, in response to Silent Spring and several environmental accidents, Earth Day was formed by several groups to educate and promote the environmental movement

 In response to the growing environmental movement the U.S. formed the EPA (1970) which set and enforced pollution standards  The EPA is an example of the government reacting to the wishes of it’s citizens

 Conservatives (often Republicans) generally believe: -that the power of government should be limited in the free enterprise system -against high taxes -have a strong religious base

 Barry Goldwater ran for President in 1964 as a Conservative Republican  Conservatism gained support during the Cold War because: 1 -Many Americans believed that too much government intervention in the economy would lead to Communism 2 -Many worried that the anti- religious Communist movement would spread world wide, and that the U.S. needed to be strong religiously

 Nixon (Republican) ran for President in 1968  To win, Nixon had to win in the South, traditionally a Democratic stronghold  To gain Southern votes, Nixon promised to be a Conservative President, and limit government powers, a long standing desire in the South  He also promised to a appoint a Southerner to the Supreme Court  Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” helped him get elected  Southerners first started to vote Republicans candidates in national elections, by the 1980s, this voting pattern moved to more local elections as well

 Events in the 1960s and 1970s slowly helped the conservatives to strengthen; by 1980, the Conservative movement was well organized  What happened in the 60s and 70s that helped the Conservative Movement? Riots in cities = people moving the suburbs Development of the religious right (after Roe v. Wade)

 What was Cesar Chavez’s main goal when he organized the farm workers’ movement?  How did Rachel Carson’s book, Silent Spring, help kick off an environmental movement?  Which political party is most closely aligned with the Conservative Movement?
