Conduction Convection Radiation

AIMS To understand the process of conduction To understand the process of convection To understand the process of radiation

CONDUCTION Occurs in solids Transfer of energy by a substance without the substance itself moving Energy is transferred to cooler parts of the piece of metal, vibrating particles pass on their extra vibrational energy to neighbouring particles Metals are very good conductors Non-metals poor conductors

Solids are made of particles called atoms and molecules, when energy as heat is absorbed by a solid the particles move around their position in the solid more.

CONVECTION Occurs in liquids and gases Transfer of energy by the movement of liquids or gases Currents occur in liquids and gases, their particles move faster when they are hot Warm regions rise up through colder regions and the colder regions replace the warmer

The liquid or gas is warmed Heat rises The heated fluid moves in bulk to a cooler region and takes the heat with it

RADIATION Transfer of energy by waves Doesn’t need particles Most of our energy comes from the sun. It must travel by radiation because there are no particles between the sun and Earth The hotter the object the more energy is radiated

Radiation Investigation Black card and silver foil Two thermometers Lamp Clamps and stands Stopwatch Sellotape one thermometer to the card and one to the foil Place the lamp equal distance between the two Switch on the lamp and take temperature recordings every minute for 10 minutes

Objects with dark, rough surfaces absorb most of the radiation and become warm/hot Objects with light coloured, shiny surfaces reflect most of the radiation and will remain cooler Houses in hot countries are often painted white why?

AIMS To understand the process of conduction To understand the process of convection To understand the process of radiation

HOMEWORK MAKE A MODEL HOUSE Your design can be varied It must have 2 levels, upstairs and downstairs, and a roof. You can use whatever material you like Clingfilm for windows, fabric for the floors, loft insulation
