The Scientific Revolution Events and people

What people thought 15001750 Everything is God’s will. The Earth is the centre of the Universe. Medicine is controlled by the 4 humours – blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm. Luckily by 1750 we have worked out that most of that is tosh. Science is key. The Sun is the centre of the Universe and the best way of finding out about medicine is by dissection. What you have to work out though is when we came about these ideas and also who thought of them.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 The Printing Press was introduced to Britain. This makes it easier for scientists to read about the latest scientific discoveries.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 Scientists met to share their discoveries. One important group in Britain was the Royal Society.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 The book Principia was published showing there were natural laws such as gravity that kept the Universe going.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 The first steam engine was developed to pump water from tin mines in Cornwall.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 It was proven that blood circulates continually around the body. Doctors begin to experiment with blood transfusions.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 The smallpox innoculation was introduced to Britain. It was tested on 6 orphans. When they survived the King’s grandchildren were given it also.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 The first accurate drawings of the human body were published.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 New mechanical looms were introduced that could weave cloth 4 times faster than before.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 It was proved that the Earth was not the centre of the Universe, it goes around the Sun instead.

What happened when? 1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 It is discovered that air is essential for breathing and for burning.

How did thinking change? Can you remember how ideas changed between 1500 and 1750? Write an overview of what changed during this time in your exercise books. Don’t forget to put the date and the title ‘The Scientific Revolution’ You have 5 minutes!

1500161015431628166116621680s168616981717 Create a timeline in your books See if you can remember when events happened using the picture prompts. Create a timeline of discovery in your books – write in the event next to each date. Make sure your spacing of events is accurate. You have 15 minutes!

Who discovered what? Isaac Newton Charles II Robert Hook William Harvey Lady Mary Wortley Francis Bacon Vesalius Galileo Robert Boyle Thomas Savery Wrote a book in 1605 called The Advancement of Learning that provided the basis for many ideas.
