3. STATISTIC  An item of information that represents numerical data.  Statistics can be flawed even when they are from a reliable source because sometimes research is conducted by two different entities and their results can differ.

4. SPECIFIC INSTANCE  An account of an actual event or occurrence.  Example: speech about Heimlich maneuver  Story about someone who saved someone who was choking by using this technique

5. TESTIMONY  A direct quotation or summary of a quotation  Example: quote from expert or someone of authority

6. ETHICAL PROOF  A piece of supporting information that builds a speaker’s credibility on a topic.

7. PATHETIC PROOF  Support material that gives emotional appeal to a presentation.

8. USING VISUAL AIDS  Clarity  Interest  Retention  Professionalism  Presenter Support  Types of Visual Aids- Objects or models, pictorial reproductions, and pictorial symbols

9. ORAL STYLE  The way a presenter uses language to express ideas  Clarity- word choice, word meanings, word order  Force- intensity or energy of your message (ex: Baptist preacher)  Beauty- visual image, emotional element, sound

10. FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE  Simile  Metaphor  Personification  (Hyperbole)

11. PARALLELISM  Arranging sentences so that words and phrases are similar in length and structure.  “I Have a Dream” “Let Freedom Ring”

12. ANTITHESIS  Pairing opposing words or ideas together.  “Sink or swim”

13. TRANSITIONS  Smooth transitions help your audience move effortlessly through your presentation.  Clarifies the relationship between two thoughts  Brings closure to the previous point before moving to the next point  Alerts listener that you are changing points
