Estimation!! Estimation ► Today we are going to expand our knowledge of rounding numbers to estimation!
2
How many Skittles are in the jar? First jar= 10 Middle jar= ??????? Last jar= 100
3
What is Estimation? Educated guess or prediction of the answer
4
Why do we estimate? Wouldn't it be great if you could quickly guess how many people were in a room, how many cars in the street, how many boxes on the shelf, or even how many seagulls on the beach? We are not talking exact answers here, but answers that are good enough for your life. THIS IS ESTIMATING!
5
How do you ROUND a number? Look for place value. (Position in which a digit is in the number) Five or more, Raise the Score! Four or less, Let it Rest!
6
Characteristics: Estimation 5-9 round up ↑ 0-4 round down ↓
7
Let’s Try It!-Do we round up or down? (Round to the nearest 10) 2 ↓ 0 18 ↓ 20 45 ↓ 50 167 ↓ 170 Remember!! Five or more raise the score. Four or less let it rest
8
Process: 5,629 Round to the nearest 100!! 1) Circle the digit your rounding to. 5, 29 2) Underline the digit to the right. 5,629 3) If the underlined number is 5 or more raise the score (circle goes up 1) 4 or less let it rest (circle goes down to 0) 4) Use 0 as a place holder 5,600 6
9
Example: 562 and 278 Nearest to 10! 5 2 → 560 2 8 → 280 Circle number and underline number to the right 562+278= ↓ 560+280= 560 +280 840 Answer 6 7

OUR CONCEPT MAP Definition: Example: Educated guess or 23 → 20 (Round to nearest 10) prediction of the answer 156 → 200 (Round to nearest 100) Characteristics: Why do we use it? 5-9 round up ↑ To make a quick guess. 0-4 round down ↓ I like to estimate when I’m shopping, that way I can keep a total of how much I can spend.
