Fluid Forces Mrs. Clarici
Pressure: Fluid = a substance that flows Force = a push or a pull Unit for force = newton or N Area = length X width Metric unit for area = m2 Pressure = force exerted over an area on the surface of an object FORCE Unit for pressure = pascal or Pa or N/m2 Pressure = force As AREA , PRESSURE area There is an inverse relationship between pressure and area.

Fluid Pressure Mrs. Clarici
fluid = a substance that flows (gas or liquid) exert = to use (influence, authority, etc) forcefully or effectively All forces exerted by the individual particles in a fluid combine to make up the pressure exerted by the fluid. Atmospheric pressure = air pressure Barometer = measures atmospheric pressure As ELEVATION , PRESSURE (less air on top of you) (altitude) As ELEVATION , PRESSURE (more air on top of you) Why do your ears “pop” when you change elevation on a plane or mountain?

Fluid Pressure Mrs. Clarici
water depth = how far below you are under water As depth , water pressure (more water -and air- on top of you) More pressure on the balloon makes it smaller. Which gas law does this demonstrate? Explain. Why does the water come out differently from each hole?
4
Archimedes’ Principle Mrs. Clarici
The buoyant force acting on a submerged object is equal to amount of fluid the object displaces. buoyant force = upward force acting on a submerged object. Buoyant force acts in the opposite direction of gravity, making the object feel lighter. (unit=N) If the weight of the rock was 50 N, what would be the weight of the water displaced? Explain.
5
Density Mrs. Clarici density = mass unit for density = g/mL or g/m3
volume
6
Pascal’s Principle Mrs. Clarici
When force is applied to a confined fluid, the change in pressure is transmitted equally to all parts of the fluid. confined fluid = fluid in a container with no openings. Hydraulic system multiplies force by applying the force to a small area. The increase in pressure is transmitted to another part of the confined fluid, which pushes on a larger surface area.
7
Bernoulli’s Principle Mrs. Clarici
As the speed of a moving fluid increases, the pressure within the fluid decreases. As speed , pressure Fluids naturally flow from high pressure to low pressure. weight = force of gravity Explain why you should not have loose clothing Why would the cans move inward near the front top of the fan in the diagram above?
