2  Author Mark Twain – born in Florida, Missouri.  Moved to Hannibal, Missouri at age 4.  Based both of two most famous novels in Hannibal.  The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876)  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884)

3  Hannibal is a city in Missouri.  Located in the counties of Marion and Ralls.  At the intersection of Interstate 72 and U.S. Routes 24, 36 and 61.

4  located at 39°42 ′ 15 ″ N 91°22 ′ 39 ″ W  total area of 16.21 square miles  15.74 square miles of land  0.47 square miles of water

5  Once was occupied by early Native tribes.  Mound Builders were first occupants.  Mounds can still be seen today.  Sac and Fox Indians were last to inhabit.

6  First explorers on record of future site of Hannibal, were Father Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673.  In the 1790's, salt was discovered in the vicinity.  Was of great value to St. Louis and other large settlements.  As salt became available elsewhere and Indian uprisings increased, the number of settlers decreased.

7  Got its name from Hannibal Creek.  Presently known as Bear Creek.  Hannibal was the name of a historic Carthaginian general.  Founded in 1819 by Moses Bates

9  Early industries included:  pork packing  soap and candle making  coopering  milling of lumber  milling of grain  rope making Early rope making Early lumber mill

10  Known for its rich railroad history.  First railroad to cross the state of Missouri was completed in 1859.  First locomotive manufactured west of the Mississippi was made in Hannibal  34 ton engine called the General Grant.

16  Hannibal High School was founded in 1896.  1232 students grades 9-12.  Team nickname is the “Pirates.”  Historic preservation trades class.  5 elementary schools. Hannibal HS Logo

17  Hannibal-LaGrange University.  Founded in 1858 in LaGrange, Missouri.  Campus moved to Hannibal in 1928.  Four-year Christian liberal arts University.

18  As of 2010, there were 17,916 people.  7,117 households.  4,400 families.  47.5% male.  52.5% female.  Average household size is 2.36 Hannibal, MO

19  Low taxes, local resources, and distance from major highways make it ideal for businesses.  General Mills and Watlow Industries have plants there  Hannibal is a Certified Local Government
