2
Anti-Corrosion Corrosion is the oxidation of a metal and some substance in the environment or when something is oxidized by oxygen.
3
Produced By: Kara Findley & Jaymee Toebben This shows how coating a metal with plastic or nonreactive metal can prevent oxidation. Other examples include painting
4
Oxidation is used to develop photographs First Br- ions are oxidized to Br. Then Silver is reduced. This is called activates, happens by light. This is the photograph During processing, the unactivated atoms are removed by oxidation as well Shane Verslues & Melony Owen
5
Anti-Corrosion Corrosion is the loss of an electron of metals reacting with water or oxygen Cathodic protection is a technique to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making that surface the cathode of an electrochemical cell.
7
Chemical substances used to eliminate unwanted color from fabrics and other materials. Color of material can be eliminated by removing these electrons by process of oxidation. Bleaches are Oxidizing Agents. About any oxidizing agent can serve as a bleach. Teeth whitening Hair dye
8
FUELS Fuels release energy as they are oxidized. Common fuels such as gasoline, kerosene, and natural gas contain compounds composed largely of carbon and hydrogen.
9
Dry Cell Battery A thin zinc cylinder serves as the anode and it undergoes oxidation: Zn (s) ---------------> Zn +2 + 2e -
10
Rapid formation and expansion of gas creates the shock wave that accompanies the detonation of an explosive
11
Chemical oxidation doesn’t involve digging up polluted soil or groundwater. Instead, wells are drilled at different depths in the polluted area. The wells pump the oxidant into the ground. The oxidant mixes with the harmful chemicals and causes them to break down. When the process is complete only water and other harmless chemicals are left behind.
12
Antiseptics are another thing that is used in oxidation.
