Monday 2/9/2015 Agenda: Heat Transfer Notes: Heat Transfer (Conduction, Convection and Radiation) Activity: Heat Transfer Worksheet Homework/Classwork Heat Transfer Worksheet due Tuesday 2/10/2015 for 25 Points
2
Energy Heat Transfer Most of the energy that reaches Earth comes from the sun (solar energy) What happens to the solar energy when it reaches Earth? ◦ First reaches Earth’s atmosphere Some gets absorbed by gases, such as ozone (O 3 ) & water vapor (H 2 O) - greenhouse gases ◦ Some gets reflected back to space by clouds & Earth’s surface ◦ Some gets absorbed by land masses or oceans
3
Energy Heat Transfer Processes Solar/heat energy gets transferred between Earth’s surface & atmosphere by Conduction Convection Radiation
4
Energy Heat Transfer Processes Conduction – process by which heat energy is transmitted through direct contact with neighboring molecules ◦ Air & water are poor conductors of heat energy ◦ Most conduction occurs at Earth’s surface
5
Energy Heat Transfer Processes Convection – process by which heat energy is transmitted by transporting groups of molecules from one place to another Can occur in fluids, such as air & water
6
Energy Heat Transfer Processes Convection – Heated molecules move faster & more spread apart compared to less heated (cooler) molecules Warmer air masses are therefore less dense (less molecules in a space) Therefore, warmer air masses rise Cooler air masses are more dense (more molecules in a space), so they fall back toward the Earth’s surface
7
Energy Heat Transfer Processes Radiation – process by which heat energy is transferred by electromagnetic waves EM Spectrum

Tuesday 2/10/2015 Agenda: Heat Transfer Review of Heat Transfer Activity: Heat Transfer Foldable (Notebook Check) Homework/Classwork Heat Transfer Foldable due Wednesday/Thursday 2/11-2/12/2015 for 30 Points
9
Heat Transfer Foldable Activity You will be making a foldable modeling the three type s of heat transfer: convection, conduction and radiation The pictures on the front of the foldable have to be associated with the type of heat transfer Your foldable needs to include “real world examples” for each type of transfer Foldable needs to be organized, neat and colored for credit!! This will count as an assignment in your next NOTEBOOK CHECK!

Wednesday/Thursday 2/11-2/12/2015 Agenda: Heat Transfer Notes: The Atmosphere Activity: Layers of the Atmosphere Packet and Graphing Activity Homework/Classwork Layers of the Atmosphere Reading and Chart due Friday for 25 Points
11
What is the Atmosphere? Atmosphere – Very thin envelope of gases that surrounds Earth ◦ Used by living organisms for chemical compounds/nutrient s (I.e., O 2, CO 2, H 2 O, N 2 ) ◦ Has no outer boundary, just fades into space
12
Past & Present Composition of Earth’s Atmosphere The composition of the Earth’s atmosphere has changed since the formation of the Earth. Earth has had approximately 3 different atmospheres over the course of 4 billion years. Earth’s First Atmosphere The Earth’s first atmosphere was mainly helium (He) & hydrogen (H).
13
Past & Present Composition of Earth’s Atmosphere Earth’s Second Atmosphere Volcanic emissions later added carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water, sulfur dioxide & other elements. No free O 2 at this time Large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from volcanoes caused the Earth’s past climate to be warmer than today’s. Without carbon dioxide, no life could be present on Earth. Ocean formation occurs due to presence of H 2 O in atmosphere
14
Past & Present Composition of Earth’s Atmosphere Today’s Atmosphere ◦ Nitrogen (N 2 )- 78% ◦ Oxygen (O 2 )- 21% ◦ Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) - 0.03% ◦ Other miscellaneous gases (I.e., H 2 O).
