The Platinum Triangle Anaheim, Ca Michael Sahimi – Kevin MacDougall – Katy Escobar

Location within Anaheim:

Background: The Platinum Triangle is currently undergoing a huge transformation. The City of Anaheim is converting the Triangle from a low-density commercial and industrial center into a mixed-use high-density hub with an emphasis on residential and commercial uses. The Triangle currently plays host to the Honda Center, Angel Stadium, and the Grove of Anaheim. Its major boundaries include the 5 and 57 Freeways and the Santa Ana River. Katella Avenue and State College Boulevard are its major routes and meet to form the Triangle’s center and a major node.

Planning Issues: Lack of Green Space
6
A Look at Green Space Anaheim 32,320 acres 600 acres of park space 1.8% Platinum Triangle, Anaheim 820 acres 0.78 acres of park space.09%
7
Planning Issues: Lack of Residential Needs Anaheim Hills Walk Score: 42 – Car Dependent Platinum Triangle Walk Score: 61 – Somewhat Walkable
8
Proposed Planning Initiatives: Promote more coordinated distribution of parks Orchestrate the development of more walkable neighborhoods throughout the city
9
Planning Issue: Roads and Streets
10
Problems: Wide lanes lead to higher speeds. High noise levels make speaking and listening extremely difficult, especially during noon and afternoon traffic. Wide streets create distance between street corners and different commercial and residential facilities, hurting the sense of an “urban community.”
11
The current street structure is an artifact of the neighborhood’s previous low- density commercial and industrial use. Possible solutions: Widening green street medians. Narrow lanes and lower speed limits.
12
Current narrow medians: Some streets have similar narrow medians, or none at all.
13
Sidewalks can be widened with more greenery in order to make streets narrower (and decrease speeds) and increase the space between traffic noise and pollution and commercial/residential facilities.
14
Planning Issue: Not enough alternative transit options Not enough bike lanes Bus runs only on two streets; does not come frequently
15
Planning Issue: Lack of mixed affordability housing Luxury apartments start at $1850 Workers at lower wage jobs can’t actually live here
16
Solutions Add bikes lanes streets, increase bus trips ARTIC transportation hub in progress…
17
Solutions Require future apartment developments to provide set amount of units at lower cost
