10.7- Freedom Rides The U.S. Supreme Court prohibited segregation in interstate bus travel. Unofficial segregation continued in the South. Freedom Rides- bus trips through the South with black and white activists who tried to use segregated facilities.

Effects Violence met Freedom Riders throughout the South. May 14- a white mob firebombed one of the buses and beat the riders that tried to escape. The incident appears on the front page of newspapers around the country.

Federal Intervention The federal government forced Alabama’s governor to provide Freedom Riders with police protection. The promised protection did not happen. Federal troops were sent to protect the riders.
