Fractured Fairy Tales What Makes a Story a Fairy Tale? 4 Fairy tales nearly always begin with the words Once upon a time or Long, long ago. 4 They usually have a good character and an evil character. 4 They might involve magic or enchantment. 4 A woodland/forest or castle is usually mentioned. 4 There is always a problem, that is eventually solved and the good characters live happily ever after.

What is a Fractured Fairy Tale? A fairy tale designed to be humorous by changing the story in an unexpected way; altering characters, or adding a modern language and events.

Use familiar characters, plots, and settings from traditional fairy tales to create “fractured” versions.

Setting Characters Point of view Time period Have characters from different fairy tales meet!

Fractured Fairy Tales You are now going to fracture a fairy tale. You will need to consider the following points: 1.Changing the setting. 2.Changing the personalities of your characters. 3.Writing the tale from the another character’s view point. 4.Changing the problem. 5.Changing the solution. 6.Adding a little humour. 7.Writing a different ending.

Must be true to form You may alter the storyline You may add an unexpected twist Create a contemporary (modern) version Elements of a novel must be present

Select a fairy tale from the list. Read the original version. Identify elements of a novel. Think of ideas for the new story. Write your fractured fairy tale. Use word processor for final copy.
