1 Lesson 5.1 Intro to the Cold War

2 Knight’s Charge Write two “complex sentences” using the work “if” that talk about World War I and II. The sentences should connect two separate ideas in one sentence. Example: If the Allied policy towards Hitler’s aggression was not appeasement, the Holocaust may not have been so horrible.

3 Weird disney fact of the day!

4 Who is leading the world?
Who are the new Big Three?

5 A few things to remember….
Capitalism (in the US): Individuals own businesses Social Darwinism Get Money, Get paid!

6 A few things to remember…
Communism (in the Soviet Union) All are “equal” Government regulates that equality No private property!

7 Results of WWII Germany was divided into 4 pieces
Different Reparations – Germany had to pay for repairs with goods and industry…NOT money! The Soviet Union received land in China and Poland They were also given the right to take some land from Germany if they wanted…but NOT money

8 The Spread of Communism
After the Yalta Conference (remember that thing?) the Soviets began to push communism into places like China and Eastern Europe. The United States wants to destroy (remove) Communism whenever possible and to contain it when that is not possible. The Soviets…..Are not happy…..

9 The Cold war…at it’s most basic
Capitalism (The USA) Vs. Communism (The USSR – Soviet Union)

10 Who is the good guy? The Marshal Plan:
The U.S. wanted Capitalism to look like it was the only way that a country could be run. The U.S. gave money to help re-build Europe (look how nice we are) to show the power of Capitalism! ….Oh, no, we did not give any money to Stalin and the Soviet Union! Remember, MONEY drives Capitalism. So, what was the goal of the Marshal plan?

11 2 New organizations! NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Military alliance to STOP the spread of Communism Warsaw Pact: Military alliance to SPREAD Communism

12 Not Again…. NATO: US, France, Great Britain, West Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, and Greece. VS. Warsaw Pact: Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, East Germany, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania

13 The IRON CURTAIN!!! First….Not really a curtain.
Second…It was the figurative “barrier” between capitalism and communism in Europe.

14

15 CAPITALISM Operated under a policy of “containment”
The goal was to “contain” the spread of communism to keep it from “infecting” other nations. This will eventually lead to other wars (Korean War, Vietnam, etc.)

16 Communism Wants to spread
Wants to reach smaller countries (Satellite countries) Those countries would then work together to defeat capitalism

17 One MAJOR PROBLEM… The Soviets learn how to create nuclear weapons…
They tested their first one in 1949.

18 Super Hero Assignment! Create a new superhero.
It must represent either CAPITALISM or COMMUNISM The following items are required: Name Symbol 3 powers Draw and color character Extra credit points for: clever weapon and or slogan.
