2 Objective: To examine the causes of the Cold War. Cold War: The state of hostility, without direct military conflict, that developed between the U.S. and the Soviet Union after WW II. The origins of the Cold War lay in profound economic, political, and philosophical differences between the two nations.

3 The Cold War: Roots of the Conflict Soviet Expansion: · The Soviet Union occupied most of Eastern Europe by the end of World War II.

4 Cold War in Europe  The conflicting aims in Germany and Eastern Europe led to tension between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II.

7 Focus on Berlin  After World War II, Germany was divided into four zones, occupied by French, British, American, and Soviet troops. Occupation zones after 1945. Berlin is the multinational area within the Soviet zone.

8 United States establishes a policy of “containment”.  Taking measures to prevent any extension of communist rule to other countries.  This policy will serve the United States throughout the Cold War.

9 Truman Doctrine When: 1947 What: Gives military help to free countries that communists are trying to take over. Why: The “Domino Theory”: If one country falls to communism, the neighboring countries will fall too.

10 Marshall Plan  When: 1948  What: Gives U.S. money to free countries to rebuild homes, factories, and farms.  Why: To make countries strong enough so they will not need Communist help.

11 Berlin Airlift 1948 *After plans to reunify Germany ended in failure, the Soviet Union blockaded all land routes into West Berlin. *The U.S. and G.B. responded with an airlift. For 327 days, planes delivered 2.3 tons of supplies to West Berlin. YouTube-Berlin Airlift

12 · In June of 1948, the French, British and American zones were joined into the nation of West Germany after the Soviets refused to end their occupation of Germany. Soviet blockade: West Germany East Germany West Berlin East Berlin

13 Opposing Alliances · In 1949, the U.S. formed an alliance with friendly European countries called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). · The members of NATO would defend each other against any Soviet aggression.

14 · In 1955, the Soviet Union formed its own military alliance called the Warsaw Pact. · The Warsaw Pact was made up of Eastern European countries dominated by Soviet control.
