1 Advertisement Analysis Recognizing Claims, Reasons, Persuasive Appeals, and Counterarguments English 9 Honors October 25-29, 2010

2 Writing Applications 2.4  Write persuasive compositions:  Structure ideas and arguments in a sustained and logical fashion.  Use specific rhetorical devices to support assertions.  Clarify and defend positions with precise and relevant evidence.  Address readers’ concerns, counterclaims, biases, and expectations.  ESLR’s: Reflective Communicators who read, write, listen, and speak well. Resourceful Learners who think critically.

3 Directions  For each of the following advertisements, look for:  The persuasive claim: What is the advertiser trying to convince you is true?  The reasons: Why does the advertiser suggest you should believe their argument?  The persuasive appeals: Does the advertiser primarily use logical (logos), emotional (pathos), or ethical (ethos) appeals?  A possible counterargument: What could someone argue that disproves the advertiser’s claim?  Record your answers in your chart.
