SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 10 6. Environment (incl. climate change) Earth Observation and Assessment Tools Sustainable Management of Resources Environmental Technologies Climate Change, Pollution and Risks SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS Environment and health Pressures on environment and climate Natural hazards

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 11 Environment FP7 Work Programme Environment Proposals for environment research should ensure that, where appropriate, protocols and plans for data collection and storage are in line and contribute to the GEO work plan. Projects should develop open, distributed, inter-operable data management and information systems and include plans for the maintenance, integration, mapping and sharing of the data generated, both during and after the end of the project.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 12 YEAR 2007 FP7 Work Programme Research Activity: Earth observation Possible topics for YEAR 2007

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 13 Proposed activities for the Earth Observation Work Programme 1) Integrating existing European Earth Observation activities in GEO (global level) 2)Developing cross-cutting research activities relevant to GEO 3)Earth Observation activities in emerging areas of research 4)Developing Capacity Building activities in the domain of Earth Observation

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 14 Integration of European activities within GEO (at the global level) Monitoring of the carbon cycle at global level – cooperation with existing international initiatives; (Coordination action, i.e. networking) Contribution to a global biodiversity observation system – relying on GBIF and existing EU projects; (Collaborative project, i.e. research activity)

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 15 Developing cross-cutting research activities relevant to GEO Fostering collaboration between European national EO research programmes; (ERA-NET, i.e. a network of EU funding agencies.) Contributing to the development of a worldwide network of in-situ observatories for seismogenic hazards; (Collaborative project)

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 16 Earth Observation activities in emerging areas (new earth observation systems) Application of Earth Observations to environmental and health issues; (Coordination action) Monitoring the ocean interior, seafloor and sub-seafloor; (Collaborative project) Contribution to the development of a Global Soil Observing System; (Collaborative project)

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 17 Developing Capacity Building activities in the domain of Earth Observation in developing countries Geo-resource information system for Africa (groundwater, energy, raw material, energy, mineral resources); (Coordination action) Improving observing systems for water resource management – collaboration with participants from developing countries; (Collaborative project) GEONETCast applications for developing countries; (Coordination action)

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 18 Also: Access to EUMETCast services for data providers from EU RTD projects; Continued support toward the functioning of the GEO Secretariat. YEAR 2007 FP7 Work Programme Research Activity: Earth observation Possible topics for YEAR 2007

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 19 EU GEO High Level Working Group Considers version 1 of the GEO 2007-2009 Work Plan is too ambitious and should be limited in scope, with a reduced number of tasks. Proposes screening the 2007-2009 WP tasks taking account of: Timeframe; Potential need for GEO to carry out an activity; Existing resources; Existing initiatives; Visibility to be achieved.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS A Edwards – ADC, Seattle, 2006 Slide 20 EU GEO High Level Working Group Is working to develop a comprehensive European strategy towards GEO. For example, “is there a need for a GEO- Net?”, (or GEO Info Sys), which might include, amongst other components: The GEOSS web portal; The GEOSS clearing house (& a possible GEOSS services network); GEONETCast; and other required systems and tools; E.g. a GEO-Grid.
