1
Laws of Motion Vocab2 8 th grade Science - Fremont
2
Inertia The tendency of an object to resist change in motion.
3
speed speed is calculated by dividing distance by time. Example: mile per hour
4
Velocity is speed (distance over time) plus DIRECTION. example: 35 mph North
5
Acceleration is a change in velocity example: speeding up, slowing down, or changing direction
6
friction a force caused by two surfaces rubbing together and works against the motion.
7
Weight the measurement of the gravitational pull on an object.
8
Air resistance a force that opposes the motion of objects through the air.
9
Projectile An object that has both horizontal & vertical motion as it follows an arched path due to gravity & the force of being “thrown,”
10
Centripetal force a force that causes an object to follow a curved path.
11
Gravity a force of attraction between objects which depends on the mass of the objects & how close they are to each other.
