6. Aims of the New NC The aim is for children to do calculations in their heads and, if the numbers are too large, to use a way of writing them down that helps their thinking. Can I solve it in my head? Can I solve it using jottings? Can I solve it using written methods?

How can you support at home?  Making Maths purposeful  At the shop – find change, round, estimate costs  Time – If I put the casserole in at 11:15 and it takes 45 minutes to cook, what time will it be finished at?  I have 150 ml of milk but need 200 ml. How many more ml do I need for the recipe?  During a week, look outside for ‘thirties’ numbers, such as 34 or 38,  on house doors, number plates, bus stops, etc. How many can you  spot?
