How many times a day do you use mental Maths? I have to leave in an hour. Do I have time to put in a load of wash? I have a quarter tank of petrol. I am driving to Abu Dhabi. Do I need to fill up? I have 35 Dirhams on me. Do I have enough cash for my shop?

3 Aims of the New NC

Aims of the New NC The aim is for children to do calculations in their heads and, if the numbers are too large, to use a way of writing them down that helps their thinking. Can I solve it in my head? Can I solve it using jottings? Can I solve it using written methods?

How can you support at home? Making Maths purposeful At the shop – find change, round, estimate costs Time – If I put the casserole in at 11:15 and it takes 45 minutes to cook, what time will it be finished at? I have 150 ml of milk but need 200 ml. How many more ml do I need for the recipe? During a week, look outside for ‘thirties’ numbers, such as 34 or 38, on house doors, number plates, bus stops, etc. How many can you spot? What is the biggest one you can find? Games like snap or bingo Board games that involve dice and spinners – helps not only with counting but with the concepts of chance.
