8/30/14 Number the first 30 pages (on top corners) of your notebook starting with the very first lined page. Think: What do you think are the benefits to keeping a science notebook?

Interactive Notebooks (INBs) in Science

Interactive Science Notebooks--- HOW?

FOLLOW THESE STEPS! Inside Front Cover Glue or tape yellow notebook rules and pink Classroom Procedures on this cover! 1 st page lined paper Print your First and Last Name, Per #, and room 823 on top Glue or tape Green Nature of Science table of contents around p. 1 and 2!

“IN” Question: You will need to copy the question, as well as answer to the best of your ability. You might not be sure of your answer here, but you must try! ‘IDK’ is not considered an answer. Concept maps, questions, brainstorming, Diagrams, Cartoons, Graphs, 3-item summary, etc. “OUT” Question: You will need to copy the question & write the answer to the best of your ability. These can be checked before you’re allowed to leave the class at the end of the period. Do not do ahead of time! (could relate to lab) Notes, Lab reports, and teacher provided instructions, guidelines, and handouts will go on the right hand side page If you run out of space, a new sheet should be glued on the bottom of the page and folded in and up. Do not go to the next page! Right Side (Teacher Led Activities) Left Side (Your Side) This is the metal spiral. DO NOT split each page in half, please!!

A new notebook for each semester!!!

Table of Contents Complete ToC, as seen on next slide! Be sure to update your ToC regularly, as it will make NB checks that much easier!

We will be gluing or taping things into the notebook throughout the quarter. --There will be NO staples in the notebooks! DO NOT RIP ANY PAGES FROM THE NOTEBOOK!! --I have loose paper, should you need it!

Adding extensions (when 1 piece just isn’t enough ) 1.Get an extra sheet of paper from Ms. S’s basket. 2.Line up the top hole of the loose sheet, then tape it onto the journal page. 3.Fold the sides & bottom up, so that nothing is hanging from your INB.

Extensions look like this! 1 2 3

Page # Title/Content Date 3Data Tables and Graphing 8/31 4Lab Guidelines 8/31 5Design Process 8/31 6Observations and Inferences 8/31 7Qual. & Quant. Observations 8/31 8-9Lab Equipment 9/1 10-11Lab Safety 9/2

Getting Started Number the first 30 pages in the TOP corners!!!. -You will put a date on the top left hand corner, below the page number (SHOULD BE AN EVEN PAGE #!!).

Start Gluing!! Glue the green Data tables sheet on page 3. Glue the blue Laboratory Guidelines half sheet on p. 4. Glue the white Design process half sheet on page 5.

Glue the yellow Inf/Obs half sheet on page 6. Glue the white Qual. Vs. Quant. Obs. Half sheet onto p. 7 Label p. 8 as “Lab Equipment.” Make a note that the Lab Equipment ID sheet will go on page 9 once it’s filled out.

p. 6 Notes I.Observations allow you to gather information about something. There are 2 main type of observations. Observations can be a) Qualitative b) Quantative

II. Inferences An inference is a conclusion based on your observations. Inferences try to explain or make sense of observations. A key word in inference is infer. Inferences may or may not be correct.

Complete Qualitative and Quantative observations half sheets on p. 6 and 7. Finish for HW

9/3 p. 8 Observation and Inference IQ: What can be inferred by the following observation? Tim was not present in Science class today, but he was here during Advisory.

OQ Where can you find the info on what to do if you forget your notebook at home or in your locker?
