1 The JCI Impact Strategy
Welcome and Introduction Slide Summary: Speaker welcomes participants and introduces the session: Speaker Notes: We are living in a world of change. It is evident from the continuous technological advancements we witness each year, the catastrophic natural events we see on the news, and the shifting global economic, political and social climate we experience in our own communities. With the world changing… evolving… and growing over the next decades, JCI must adapt and evolve too. Our members and organization must move forward in a new direction. The same JCI Mission and Vision – but new goals, new actions and new strategies. A goal that will propel us into the future. A focus fit for the 21st century. Today’s session will focus on that direction JCI wants to move, the goal we will accomplish; and the actions we can take to achieve that goal and ensure JCI exists in communities creating impact for another 100 years.

2 BHAG SLIDE II. JCI’s Long Term Goal a. What does this goal mean?
Speaker introduces JCI’s long-term goal for the future, a result of the 2013 Strategic Planning Committee’s work and part of the 2014 – 2018 JCI Strategic Plan: JCI will be the organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. This is JCI’s long-term goal for the future. You may also recognize it as our strategic position statement, an outcome of the 2013 JCI Strategic Planning Committee’s work and outlined in the JCI Strategic Plan. This statement describes how JCI is recognized in the future, how society and the world perceive us as an organization. A strategic position statement should also define a specific need and how the organization is uniquely positioned to address this need. We are all well aware of the challenges facing our world: poverty, hunger, disease, unemployment, conflict. We also know that it will take more than one JCI member or even one JCI Local Organization to solve the greatest challenges facing our communities. It will take all sectors of society working together in collaboration; taking ownership for both the challenges and the solutions that will lead to sustainable impact. Pose the question: How long do you think it will take us to achieve this goal? To be recognized as the organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact? It is important to note that this is not a goal for tomorrow, or even a year from now or even five years from now. This is a goal for 30 years from now, when it will be your kids and then grandkids who will be running this organization. To build JCI into the organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact, it will take hard work, big ideas, and concrete actions. So let us take a minute to discuss how we will attain this goal and the kinds of ideas and actions we will need.

3 How do we attain our long-term goal?
To achieve the JCI Mission and Vision and to expand our impact across the globe JCI must continue to engage and empower young people. JCI will be the organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. II. JCI’s Long Term Goal b. How do we achieve this? Now the group will turn their focus to how we can actually accomplish this big goal and be the organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact? Split the participants into small groups and have them discuss and answer this question. All final responses should be written on a flip chart and groups should prepare to present the results of their brainstorming. You may not be able to get to all groups depending on time. Help facilitate the conversations by directing participants to consider the five strategies outlined in the 2014 – 2018 JCI Strategic Plan. Some expected responses could include: Implementing the active citizen framework to create impact, greater communication within communities and the JCI Network, engaging community leaders and connecting with all sectors of society at the local level. Link their responses to the need to expand our impact and our further need to empower more young active citizens as part of the JCI Movement to build a better world. Refer to the Impact Strategy from the 2014 – 2018 JCI Strategic Plan: JCI will enable communities to create sustainable impact – one thing the community will need is strong, sustainable and impactful JCI Local Organizations with passionate young members. After Group Presentations CLICK ANIMATION and continue with speaker notes: The mission of JCI is to empower young people to create positive change. This sustainable impact is achieved through the collective action of active citizens across local communities. Therefore JCI organizations around the world must engage, mobilize and prepare young people to take responsibility for local issues and find targeted, sustainable solutions. The role of young people in changing the world is the very foundation from which this organization achieves its goals and therefore organizations must actively work to empower young people both inside and outside the organization, to enable communities to achieve sustainable impact. Point out the slide: It says empowering young people, not JCI members. The biggest opportunities for JCI do not lie within this organization but instead are outside the organization. Let us discover how JCI organizations are around the world are taking advantage of those opportunities to empower young people and expand their impact.

4 United for Impact II. JCI’s Long Term Goal
c. What does this impact look like? After nearly 100 years of creating impact, JCI examined the actions taken and the processes followed which lead to the most impact. It was these ideas and best practices that helped JCI develop the JCI Active Citizen Framework. Designed to address all types of community issues, members today are guided by the Framework which provides a methodology for conducting impactful projects that provide sustainable solutions. Below are two such stories of impact: “Storytelling” – Using the project summary documents tell the inspirational and motivating story of JCI members uniting all sectors of society to create sustainable impact in their community. When telling the stories of impact remember that these are supposed to be inspirational stories that will motivate individuals to not only participate in this session, but also take action after to expand their own impact in their local communities. CLICK for ANIMATION [“Ensuring the well-being of mothers, infants and children is important to any society because it determines a strong foundation for healthy communities and generations to come. JCI Bangladesh understands the negative consequences inadequate maternal healthcare can have on a community, as their country is ranked 4th highest in maternal mortality rate in the world. This issues motivated members of JCI Dhaka Cosmopolitan to take action that culminated with the “Better Health for a Better Life” Project. It all began with a community needs analysis, which…. …While members in Bangladesh determined that maternal healthcare was a priority need in the community, members of JCI Germany focused their attention on youth unemployment and the factors that contribute to this issue in their country. They identified the problem of high high school drop out rates. Over 58,000 young adults dropping out of school each year, which is contributing directly to the high youth unemployment rates. To determine the root causes of the drop outs JCI Germany embarked on a nation wide needs analysis that involved surveying…] [At the end of your “storytelling” pass out the project summaries for participants to review and look to for inspiration when taking action to unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact.] So now that we understand what that impact looks like and the positive change it creates in communities, the question is how can we replicate these kinds of actions and this kind of impact in communities where JCI does exist and where JCI does not exist.

5 How will we expand our impact?
1. Enabling communities where JCI does exist to achieve sustainable impact 2. Enabling communities where JCI does NOT exist to achieve sustainable impact III. Enabling Communities to Achieve Impact a. Expanding our Impact When we consider the JCI Strategic Plan and the Impact Strategy (JCI will enable communities to achieve sustainable impact) from an organizational perspective there are two types of communities; those where JCI already exists with operating Local Organizations and those communities where JCI does not exist. When we consider the Impact Strategy of Enabling Communities to achieve sustainable impact from an organizational perspective there are two kinds of communities we are talking about: [CLICK for ANIMATION] 1. Enabling communities where JCI does exist to achieve sustainable impact. – There are many kinds of JCI Local Organizations around the world, some that are doing amazing things while there are others that have big dreams but struggle to achieve them. No matter the condition of JCI in local communities around the world, they all have the opportunity to expand their impact within the local community. 2. Enabling communities where JCI does NOT exist to achieve sustainable impact. - There are also communities where JCI does not exist, but could still benefit from the presence of a JCI Local Organization who takes action to provide sustainable solutions to community challenges. We have brainstormed about what is needed to achieve our long-term goal of being the organization that will unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact, as well as have shared examples of what that impact looks like and how it was achieved. What we must consider now is how we can enable communities where JCI does exist and where we do not exist to achieve sustainable impact, and we will do that with a group brainstorming activity.

6 Action to Expand our Impact
Scenario 1: How do we expand our impact in communities where JCI does exist? Scenario 2: How do we expand our impact into communities where JCI does NOT exist? How do we enable communities to achieve sustainable impact? III. Enabling Communities to Achieve Impact b. Scenario Exercises Depending on the number of participants break them into groups and assign each group one of the scenarios presented above to discuss. What activities could be conducted and action steps taken to enable communities where JCI does exist and where JCI does not exist to achieve sustainable impact? Have participants write down their answers on a flip chart and prepare to present their results. You may not be able to get all groups depending on time. After presentations, draw connections between the action steps outlined for communities where JCI does not exist and those where we do. Many of the same types of activities were probably brainstormed. So from your presentations, and the ideas you all came up with, it seems that there are key activities and steps that are important to enabling a community to achieve sustainable impact. But what is most important to note about all of your ideas is that they involve a: [CLICK for ANIMATION] A need-focused and community-based approach. Focusing on the needs of the community will keep this organization relevant while empowering the community to take ownership in building an impactful local organization will ensure they are invested in the lasting success of JCI in their community. With relevance and engagement with the community, these sustainable local organizations will have built the foundation from which they can unite all sectors of society to achieve sustainable impact. Over the past few years JCI has carefully studied the elements of successful local organizations that are enabling their community to achieve sustainable impact. This led to the development of a comprehensive strategy for building and developing sustainable and impactful JCI local organizations in communities around the world. A need-focused and community-based approach

7 The 5X5 Strategy to Expand Impact
The Strategy The 5X5 Strategy to Expand Impact Identify the Community 5. Build an Impactful JCI Local Organization 2. Connect with Community Stakeholders IV. The Impact Strategy a. Overview Provide an overview to participants of the process they can implement to enable communities to achieve sustainable impact. Whether a JCI Local Organization exists already or not, this same process can be conducted to build a foundation in the community from which JCI can unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. Today this is known as the Impact Strategy, a 5-step process that can guide young active citizens in building a platform in their community from which they can unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. Again this strategy was developed based on the experiences of members around the world and has been tested in communities, especially in JCI USA which experienced growth and greater progress in impact for the first time in 20 years in From these experiences it was determined that the most successful, strong and impactful JCI Organizations are those that are rooted in the community and it is those kinds of organizations and communities that the Impact Strategy works to develop. [CLICK for ANIMATION] This strategy all begins with an active citizen. This could be a JCI Officer like yourself eager to expand the impact of our organization into communities where we do not exist, or it could be a local organization president, who is motivated increase the impact of their chapter in the local community. It could also be someone who is not necessarily a JCI member yet, but has demonstrated their passion for creating positive change in their community, but is unsure how to organize to do so. With a motivated young active citizen eager to create positive change it is time to take action. Whether you are trying to start a local organization or strengthen an existing one, the course of action to do so will look different depending on the community you are working in. However there is a general process you can follow to guide such efforts and ensure you are building a local organization that is sustainable and will create positive change for generations to come. The process is outlined in these five steps: [CLICK for ANIMATION] Identify the Community – Will you target a community where JCI currently exists with a local organization, or will you target your efforts towards a community where no JCI local organization exists? Connect with Community Stakeholders – Enabling a community to achieve sustainable impact requires young active citizens and community support. Finding such resources involves immersing oneself in the community and identifying community stakeholders who can connect you to those young leaders and sources of support. Engage Young Community Leaders - To push this process forward and mobilize the community to achieve sustainable impact, you need a core group of passionate individuals who will ensure momentum is not lost in the community. Unite Active Citizens - These young leaders will then be the force to mobilize other active citizens, community stakeholders and sectors of society to unite together to create sustainable impact. Build an Impactful Local Organization – With a shared mission, vision and goal JCI can begin taking action that will enable the community to achieve sustainable impact. Then you can start the process to expand our impact again in new communities! So now it is time to take a deeper look at these individual steps to really see the kind of work they entail and how they contribute to building a foundation from which JCI can unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. 4. Unite Active Citizens 3. Engage Young Community Leaders

8 Identify the Community
Identify the Need Identify the Focus Identify the IMPACT Analyze internally and externally Conduct SWOT Analysis Conduct Community Needs Analysis Determine if sufficient resources exist to solve the issues both internal and external IV. The Impact Strategy i. Identify the Community This first step requires active citizens to analyze internally and externally to prepare themselves to address the greatest problems facing the community. CLICK for ANIMATION The process begins with identifying the community. Whether you identify a community where JCI exists or where JCI does not exist this step involves research that will help you identify a community to target your efforts. If it is a community where JCI does not exist, there are key traits that will allow you to know if this community is open to opportunities that will enable them to achieve sustainable impact. Some of these aspects include a sufficient youth population as well as key community resources and stakeholders that you could collaborate with. This step also involves identifying the needs within the community. If you identify a community where a JCI Local Organization already exists, what kinds of internal challenges does the organization want to focus on, and ultimately what is the kind of impact the community wants to create. To create lasting impact, you must have a strong local organization that understands the needs of the community. Therefore this step of identifying the community requires active citizens to analyze internally and externally, to prepare themselves to address the greatest problems facing the community. Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each community. Conduct a needs analysis to understand what are the greatest issues affecting this community. Determine whether a JCI Local Organization in collaboration with the community can address these issues. [Depending on time you could pose the question: What type of needs does your community face which JCI could enable the community to address? What kind of impact do you want to enable the community to achieve? This should be a large group discussion with responses written on the flip chart by the facilitator.] Once you have determined that this is the community you want to target, the problem you want to tackle and impact you want to achieve, it’s time to take action to connect with community stakeholders.

9 Connect with Community Stakeholders
Purpose of Stakeholder Meetings: Serve as an introduction for JCI into the local community Learn about community needs your local organization can address Establish supporters that help start, maintain and maximize impact Gain referrals that will lead you to the 5 young community leaders! Identify key community stakeholders who can support *Note: If you don’t know where to start then ALWAYS START WITH THE MAYOR! Demonstrate commitment to creating sustainable impact IV. The Impact Strategy ii. Connect with Community Stakeholders To find the young, enthusiastic active citizens in the community and those who will support them in their effort to create sustainable impact, we must immerse ourselves in the community and connect with community stakeholders. Enabling a community to achieve sustainable impact requires passionate young active citizens and community support. Therefore it is important to establish this platform early on from which the organization can be built on. Finding such resources requires one to immerse themselves in the community and identify stakeholders who can connect you to those potential JCI members and sources of support. Pose this question: When meeting with these important stakeholders from all sectors of the local community, it is important to have a purpose for the meeting. What do you think the purpose of these meetings are in the context of the Impact Strategy and what would be expected outcomes? (Discuss various purpose and intended outcomes of meeting with stakeholders.) CLICK for ANIMATION and then summarize the responses with those listed on the slide. It is important to note that even if JCI exists within the community, we cannot assume that the community knows about the organization or the direction we are moving towards. Therefore these meetings are key to not only the impact strategy but also achieving our long-term goal. To unite all sectors of society to achieve sustainable impact, JCI will need to build lasting relationships based on shared goals. These meetings are your and JCI’s opportunity to begin building those sustainable relationships. CLICK for ANIMATION: If you are unsure where to begin then examine data from your needs analysis and conduct research to identify stakeholders who can provide information on young leaders in the community and groups eager to partner for impact. After identifying these individuals coordinate a meeting, series of meetings or group meetings to introduce JCI and begin building a strong relationship that will lead to the creation of positive change. Learn about the problems the community faces and demonstrate your commitment to providing sustainable solutions. Listen to the stakeholders needs, interests and passions to identify shared goals from which support can be garnered. Lastly these meetings should help you gain referrals to potential members or partners who can champion your cause and expand your impact in the community. [Depending on time you could pose the question: Based on your on community and the needs they face, what are key stakeholders you can already identify, that you know you should meet with and would help you achieve the results described? This should be a large group discussion with responses written on the flip chart by the facilitator.] Once you have met with individuals, work to maintain communication and engagement. To ultimately achieve sustainable impact, those relationships must be built and sustained through effective communication. Organize meetings to introduce JCI to community

10 Engage Community Leaders
5 young individuals who are community leaders and can lead in expanding impact within the community Founding members and motivators to develop local organization Recognized as leaders by the community Have a strong connection and passion for their community Committed to creating sustainable impact with JCI Engagement with JCI through: IV. Impact Strategy iii. Engage Community Leaders A community-based approach to developing an impactful JCI Local Organization requires a core group of passionate individual who will ensure momentum is not lost in the community. These young “community leaders” will be the foundation from which the organization is developed, serving as initial members while also engaging other active citizens to join. As we said before enabling a community to achieve sustainable impact requires a need-focused and community-based approach. This approach requires a group of passionate individuals who will ensure momentum is not lost. They bring a new energy and fresh perspective that can be leveraged to continue developing JCI within the community to ultimately expand impact. This group of motivated active citizens or “5 young community leaders” will be the foundation from which the organization is developed in the community, serving as initial members while also engaging other enthusiastic young people to join. As you continue to meet with stakeholders and make contact with their referrals, you will come across individuals who stand out among the crowd. Individuals whose passion, skill and connection to the community will help drive the success of the Local Organization and its efforts to create impact. Continual communication and engagement is needed to ensure the leaders are not only committing to creating impact in their community but also doing so with JCI. Selecting a diverse group of individuals with a broad range of varied skills and occupations will ensure that the Local Organization will be equipped to handle any adversity they face in their mission to create positive change. However it is important that these individuals have lived and worked within the community for an extended period of time, are recognized as a leader by stakeholders and have the time and flexibility to commit to the new Local Organization. CLICK for ANIMATION Once these leaders are interested you can get them more involved and engaged with JCI through Trainings, meeting other JCI Members, Officers and active citizens in their community like stakeholders. You can begin discussing challenges that face the community and the types of solutions they could embark on as members, as well get them involved in existing projects by your local organization or those neighboring your community. Engagement will look different between communities where JCI exists and those where we do not. It is important that all five community leaders are identified, engaged and committed to supporting the start of the new local organization and being a founding member. They must understand their role as agents of change before moving on to the next step. So let us take a closer look at these young leaders and the kinds of qualities they should have and passion needed to motivate others in the community towards creating positive change. Meeting Active Citizens Analyzing Community Needs Action To Impact Training

11 The Ideal Active Citizen
The Ideal Member 25 – 32 Age Minimum 8 Years Long-Term Commitment Interest in Building Effective Projects Interest in Sustainable Organizations Flexible Settling Down Unburdened with Extensive Family IV. Impact Strategy iii. Engage Community Leaders Although anyone aged 18 – 40 is eligible to join JCI, not everyone in that age range is equipped with the skills, knowledge and passion to support the JCI Mission and create impact. The type of new members JCI will look for when implementing the impact strategy are described below. In community leaders and potential enablers of community impact, JCI will seek out active citizens, who take an interest in the wellbeing of their communities and demonstrate a commitment to tackling problems and providing sustainable solutions. Consider the most active of members you all have encountered. Picture their motivation, enthusiasm, and passion for creating impact with JCI. It is those qualities that we want to capture in a young community leader and potential JCI member: Young, Energetic, Open Minded, Willing to Explore New Ideas, and then key qualities that can lead to the creation of sustainable solutions for local communities – Sociable, Skills and Knowledge. CLICK for ANIMATION With membership age limited to 18-40, bringing in young members to commit several years to building effective projects will be essential to also building sustainable organizations that create impact. While no median age will be appropriate for every organization or community, focusing on the age range of as our target audience will provide a great flexibility while ensuring a minimum of eight years as a JCI member. Additionally, individuals at this age are settling down, unburdened with extensive family obligations, and open-minded about new opportunities to make an impact. Finding these individuals and then bringing them to JCI requires action!

12 Unite Active Citizens An inspirational and empowering event that unites active citizens around the needs of the community and engages them with opportunities to create sustainable impact with JCI! IV. Impact Strategy iv. Unite Active Citizens Once you have identified a number of individuals who have expressed not only an interest to join the organization but commit to create positive change, it is time to unite these active citizens around the needs of the community. Once the foundation for an impactful organization is established with the identified community leaders the next step is to work with them to unite young active citizens in the local community. Motivate the community leaders to promote this opportunity to impact the community with JCI and invite other active citizens to join. Going five for five – bringing five individuals for each original five young community leaders – will rapidly expand the organization and its ability to affect change and create impact. Unite these individuals through an inspirational and empowering event that will not only inspire them to join the JCI Local Organization but also to take actions that impact. These events will look different based on the community, its needs and whether you are working in a community where JCI exists currently or where no organization is present. Examples of an inspiring event that can unite active citizens is a large group presentation where JCI: The Opportunity to Impact is delivered (new JCI Membership Orientation), or invite them to an on-going project or engage them with a JCI Active Citizen FrameWorkshop. [Depending on time you could pose the question: What type of inspiring events could be coordinated to engage potential members to join a JCI Local Organization? This should be a large group discussion with responses written on the flip chart by the facilitator.] Once the leaders have mobilized and united enough active citizens, it is time to get organized, conduct meetings and begin determining what actions can be taken to enable the community to achieve sustainable impact as part of the global JCI Movement.

13 Build an Impactful Local Organization
You have empowered young people, what comes next? Action for Impact Use the Active Citizen Framework as a guide to create sustainable impact in the community! Organizational Planning Develop a long-term and short-term plan of action Community Engagement Get involved in existing community opportunities, identifying potential partners for future initiatives Membership Development Training, JCI Programs, and Active Citizen FrameWorkshops Administrative Matters Applications, Dues, Constitution, Elections, Website IV. Impact Strategy v. Build an Impactful JCI Local Organization By this step you have not only identified a number of individuals who have the passion and commitment to create impact with JCI, but you have also taken measures to understand the community and position JCI as an organization that will create positive change for years to come. So now it is time to make it all official and get the local organization on track to providing sustainable solutions to the community. While you may have empowered and passionate young people ready to enable their community to achieve sustainable impact, the work is not over. With strong, committed leaders and a motivated group of young active citizens, you’re ready to strengthen the JCI both within the community and the Junior Chamber International Movement. This step often takes the most planning, effort and time because ultimately this step never ends. There is always room for JCI members and local organizations to build themselves into sustainable and impactful entities within their local community. However there are key activities that can be conducted within the first year of the organization to ensure they are on the right track to achieving sustainable impact in their community. These activities include: CLICK for ANIMATION Taking action for impact. Using the Active Citizen Framework as a guide, local organizations can begin the process of identifying the communities greatest needs and their root causes, and then begin formulating sustainable solutions around those challenges. Outlining both a long-term and short-term plan of action for the local organization. The short-term can be for their first year, while the long-term can be a 5-year strategic plan. Community engagement, this is a great way to keep members involved and active while the local organization is still getting its feet wet. See what volunteer opportunities or initiatives your members and local organization can collaborate on to continue building relationships for future impact in the community. Membership Development is another great way to keep new members engaged. Coordinate trainings like JCI Achieve and JCI Impact to engrain new members with the JCI Culture and mission to impact communities around the world. Sorting out all administrative matters and details like applications, dues, creating and sharing a constitution, conducting elections and setting up a JCI affiliated website. While there are a number of areas of activity before that can be very important to members and young people around the world, it is important to not forget that it is this first area… taking action to create sustainable impact in communities, this is why the impact strategy was implemented, this is why young people came together and this is why JCI exists around the world.

14 Build an Impactful JCI Local Organization
A single Active Citizen Build an Impactful JCI Local Organization 5 Young Community Leaders IV. The JCI Impact Strategy a. An Overview You have reviewed each step of the 5-step impact strategy with participants so let us review briefly. CLICK for ANIMATION throughout the speaking portion. The process begins with a single active citizen, someone like yourself who is passionate about the organization, our mission and long-term goal of uniting all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. You work with other JCI Members and young active citizens in the country or region to identify a local community that is ready, eager and in need for JCI to enable them to achieve sustainable impact. After conducting numerous stakeholder meetings in the community and gaining countless referrals you think you’ve identified your 5 young community leaders, individuals who are passionate about their community and creating sustainable impact for generations to come. After continuous engagement with these leaders and ensuring a strong understanding of the role they play in this strategy, JCI and the community, it is time to put them to work. Empower them with the responsibility of coordinating an event that can bring together young active citizens in the community and inspire them to take action with JCI that will enable the community to achieve sustainable impact. Task each leader with bringing 5 young people to the meeting, at least 5 young people who they know share their passion and motivation. And at this meeting you introduce JCI, at this meeting and following it you communicate about the opportunities JCI can create for them as individuals and as a community. You, the leaders and your supporters in the community must continue spreading this message until you have at least 30 committed young people, who are motivated to create positive change in their community. Then the real work begins of building an impactful JCI Local Organization that takes action to create positive change and unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. 25 Empowered Young People

15 What action can you take to Empower and Impact?
IV. Impact Strategy b. What actions can you take? Now that participants have a deeper understanding of the Impact Strategy and why it is needed, it is time for them to start considering what they can do to expand the impact of JCI, enable communities to achieve sustainable impact and ultimately unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact. Now that you all have a greater understanding of the Impact Strategy and how it can help us achieve our long-term goal of being the organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact, it is time to consider what kinds of actions you can take to facilitate this process and support the achievement of our long-term strategic goal. [Pose the question: What action can you take to Impact? This should be a large group discussion with the facilitator.] It is so inspiring to hear your passion for expanding our impact and eagerness to take action to implement the growth strategy. However before we conclude it is important to stress the key knowledge you will need to enable communities to achieve sustainable impact.

16 Strategic Tool VI. Closing
a. JCI’s Strategic Tool: The JCI Active Citizen Framework Knowledge of the JCI Active Citizen Framework is necessary to enable communities to achieve sustainable impact. The JCI Impact Strategy is all about taking action that enables communities to create sustainable impact. To enable communities to do this we talk of both targeting communities where JCI exists currently and those where we do not using the JCI Impact Strategy, however sustainable impact is created and achieved through the collective ACTION of active citizens across local communities. Designed to address all types of community issues, JCI members are guided by the JCI Active Citizen Framework, which provides a methodology for conducting impactful projects. As you all know and have discussed the process consists of assessing community needs, formulating sustainable solutions, and evaluating results to ensure sustainability. Community partners, business owners and government officials are engaged throughout each step of the process. The collaborative ownership of challenges and solutions by all community stakeholders is what produces sustainable impact. Creating sustainable impact is important because it leads to a world where human security is a reality for all global citizens. Something that is not a reality for billions of people today. And as an organization that empowers young people to create positive change in local communities across the world, JCI is uniquely positioned to address this need. Therefore knowledge of the Active Citizen Framework and how this process can guide you to unite all sectors of society to create sustainable impact, is necessary to implement the impact strategy.

17 Communicating Impact Consistent and effective communication will ensure: Young people join the organization to achieve the JCI Mission of creating positive change The local organization is focused on the needs of the community Position the local organization as solution providers in the community Keep your organization at the front of people’s minds JCI enables communities to achieve sustainable impact VI. Closing b. Communicating Impact The key to implementing the JCI Impact Strategy, conducting JCI Active Citizen Framework projects, and uniting all sectors of society to achieve sustainable impact is strong and effective community engagement. This requires clear and well organized communication. The key to implementing the JCI Impact Strategy, conducting JCI Active Citizen Framework projects, and uniting all sectors of society to achieve sustainable impact is strong and effective community engagement.. This requires clear and well-organized communication. Each step of this JCI Impact Strategy has its own objectives whether that is gaining referrals to community leaders or garnering a commitment to join the JCI Local Organization. To achieve each objective and complete each step, you need to consider what you are trying to communicate, to who and why. By using the JCI Mission as a guide, you will ensure that all your communications not only support the growth and development of JCI but also help to create positive change in the community. Effective communication will keep the focus of the JCI Local Organization on the issues within the community and actions oriented around creating impact. While professional benefits and development opportunities are important to engaging young people, these aspects of JCI membership should be regarded as secondary to the accomplishment of the JCI Mission and achieving our long term goal. Motivating and inspiring young people to take action and find sustainable solutions to community challenges will be the key driver behind the communications of the impact strategy. By using the JCI Active Citizen Framework as a guide, you can ensure that when communicating about JCI in communities across the globe, you are positioning us as the organization that unites all sectors of society to create sustainable impact.

18 IMPACT “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world – indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead VI. Closing c. Power close Power close. When 2014 comes to an end, what do you want to say you achieved? Have you inspired members to unite with other link-minded individuals in the community? Did you motivate young people to take action and conduct JCI Active Citizen Framework Projects? Can you say you helped enable communities to achieve sustainable impact? The ability to ensure human security, and global development begins in local communities. It can also begin with JCI and young active citizens. Remember: “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world – indeed it is the only thing that ever has.
