4 WGISS 19DSTT Web Services4 What has been tried HTML Frames –Allows some information to stay on the screen while smaller amounts are updated Animated GIF –Adds “life” to a page without too much download lag –Can be quite annoying Java –Long download times –Not as compatible among platforms as hoped

5 WGISS 19DSTT Web Services5 More recent developments Flash –Initially a closed, single-vendor tool –More recently, not so closed, still single- vendor SVG –Very open standard –Poorly implemented Javascript –Initially had compatibility problems –Becoming easier to deliver across platforms now

6 WGISS 19DSTT Web Services6 Thick clients are no longer taboo Initially Disguised as “plug-ins” –Real Media –Windows Media Player –Quicktime Now people are willing to download if “cool” enough –NASA World Wind –Keyhole
