2 ASIA’s mission  To empower and advocate for Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders (AAPIs); and to provide AAPIs access to quality culturally, and linguistically appropriate information and services

7 Working with Limited English Speaking Communities Use a variety of approaches to support effective communication with clients who have Limited English Speaking Proficiency 1. Interpreters 2. Bilingual Staff 3. Written Translation Materials 4. Bilingual/Bicultural Providers

8 Key communication skills with persons with Limited English Speaker Listen carefully Make your statements as specific as possible Let the person see your lips as you speak Don’t rush – be patient Use simple sentence structure Use body language to illustrate Use the vocabulary that the client has used Emphasize key words Make sure the client understands by having them restate what you said Use Pen and Notebook
