Sandia is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the United States Department of Energy under contract DE-AC04-94AL85000. Joint SPAA/PODC 2005 Cindy Phillips, Phil Gibbons (SPAA) Mark Tuttle, Gil Neiger (PODC)
2
Slide 2 Recall last year’s decisions First priority: co-location with PODC in 2005 Given that, strong preference for Santa Fe over Las Vegas –As presented with Sandia Labs’-negotiated room rate of government per diem (then $99/night)
3
Slide 3 SPAA/PODC Co-location July 17-20 4 days for PODC (Sun-Wed), 3 days for SPAA (Mon-Wed) Joint reception Sunday evening (typical SPAA timing) Plenary speakers 2 plenary sessions: one from PODC, one from SPAA –PC chairs will pick a “best of” session?
4
Slide 4 Location Issues Summer 2003: Decision to co-locate with PODC in Seattle ~January 2004: Seattle falls through ACM will not let Sandia negotiate the rates –Would probably also have required some formal sponsor relationship –Best rate ACM could negotiate in Santa Fe was $149/night Note: given timing and location, this was a good rate
5
Slide 5 Las Vegas in 2005: July 17-20 Alexis Park Resort –$79/night –Should be reasonable airfare and connections especially within US –Really is (supposed to be) parklike, 20 acres 3 pools (2 are 24-hour) –No casino –1 mile from the strip –Close to UNLV –Close to the airport (but no obvious noise problem) –Rooms supposedly recently renovated

Slide 6 Some Outdoor Pictures (from www.alexispark.com)
7
Slide 7 Couple of Inside Pictures
8
Slide 8 Issues Initial food prices (and possibly A/V) are very high –ACM says they’re “average” (for the area?) –SPAA and PODC treasurers expect $100-$150 increase in registration
9
Slide 9 Possible Cost Work Arounds ACM expects some flexibility (from the hotel) later More sponsorship? Less food (no breakfasts? No Wednesday lunch? Box lunches?) –There are restaurants on the strip, 1 mile away –There are “campus style” restaurants near the University Suggestion: Don’t include the banquet with the registration price –We could go to a very good show Discussion: Keep registration under $400 “at all costs?”
