Writing Rebuttals
2
Ethos To make yourself sound more credible, it is important to present an opposing viewpoint and then “rebut” that view. To rebut a viewpoint is to explain what is wrong with that point of view.
3
Example Some experts believe that a low-carb diet is healthy, but the American Heart Association still recommends a low-fat diet as the best way to stay healthy.
4
Transitions Transition words are key to a good rebuttal. Ex. While many people purchase animals at a pet store, it is much more compassionate to adopt an animal from your local Humane Society.
5
Practice 1. Tanya has a huge crush on Ryan Seacrest. I think he is lame. 2. Some people are crazy about Starbucks White Mochas. I prefer Caramel Frappuccinos. 3. Mom says it would look tacky to get my nose pierced. I think it would look refined.
6
Writing Rebuttals Choose one of the following and create a t-chart showing the pros and cons of the statement: Schools should not be co-ed. Teens/Kids should be paid for household chores. College athletes should be paid. RHS students should wear uniforms.
7
Triple Chunk Now write a triple chunk about the topic you choose. Your final piece of evidence and commentary should be a rebuttal.
