“The Hive” (working title) Andy Kobyljanec Intelligent Machine Design Lab Project 1.29.2008

The Task The robot system will find and repair imperfections in a controlled environment The environment in this task will be a black surface with white or colored spots as imperfections Robots will use beacons to communicate where imperfections are found

Applications – Conceptual Goals One goal of this project is to demonstrate the concept of decoupling inspection and repair tasks Robots are much better at cheaply inspecting environments, but repair can often be expensive and mechanically complex Multiple simple inspection robots can scan an environment and flag areas for repair, and one repair robot can perform repairs

Applications — Examples TaskData to InspectRepair Made Carpet CleaningColorWashing carpet Roof InspectionTemperature Color Add insulation Patch roof AgriculturalSoil Moisture Fertilizer Level Water field Add fertilizer SecurityChemical/Explosive Detection Neutralize threat Black Poster board on floorColorCover up discolorations

Robot Tasks Master Robot Waits until a beacon is found Approaches beacons and picks them up Performs task relating to beacon Slave Robots Roams around environment Searches for imperfections Leaves beacons on imperfection locations
