3 Why was the Civil Rights Movement Necessary? 13 th amendment- “freed slaves” Intention/assumption- blacks free=equal citizens (failed) 14 th amendment- “blacks are citizens” Intention/assumption- black= citizens=vote= same rights and privileges as white counterparts (failed)

4 15 th - “can’t deny anyone the right to vote based on race, previous servitude, religion,…” Intention/assumption-black males can vote (failed)

5 Dual Society- 2 separate societies: white society and black society- co-exist Why? 1. legislation: Plessy vs. Ferguson 2. tradition: action done automatically usu. from generation to generation

6 How does the NAACP intends to obtain EQUAL civil rights for blacks? Find instances where a black person’s constitutional rights (14 th amendment)have been violated and take the organization/individual to court. Brown vs. BOE Who? Why? Which amendment was violated? Ruling/outcome?

7 Shortcomings of Brown vs. BOE 1. no deadline 2. allowed each state to make the ruling effective in their state 3. tradition 4. increase in private & creating charter schools

8 How does Georgia respond to the Brown decision? Private schools Some public schools are closed rather than desegregate Prosecute those who permit segregation Wait till forced
