1 Do Now Write a few sentences to compare and contrast scalar quantity with vector quantity.

2 A scalar is a quantity that can be completely described by one value: the magnitude.
You can think of magnitude as size or amount, including units.

3 A vector is a quantity that includes both magnitude and direction.
Vectors require more than one number. The information “1 kilometer, 40 degrees east of north” is an example of a vector.

4 Vector quantities are often represented by scaled arrowhead line segment and direction.
The arrow points in the directions of the force, motion, displacement, etc. It is often specified by an angle. The length of the line represents the magnitude (how far, how fast, how strong, etc, depending on the type of vector).

5 In drawing a vector as an arrow you must choose a scale.
If you walk five meters east, your displacement can be represented by a 5 cm arrow pointing to the east.

6 resultant The resultant is the sum of two or more vectors added together.

7 A hiker walks three kilometer east
A hiker walks three kilometer east. He then turns and walks eight kilometers north. Using the graphical method find the hiker resultant displacement. Step 1 is always to create a scale. Step 2 Draw each vector to scale with the arrowhead point in the correct direction. Step 3 Draw the resultant from the start point to the end point. Step 4 measure the resultant and multiply by your conversion factor to get the actual measurement. 8.6cm (1cm/km) = 8.6 km Step 5 determine the direction of the resultant. 620 NE

8 A driver drives 30 km north. He then turns and drives 50km west
A driver drives 30 km north. He then turns and drives 50km west. Find magnitude and direction of the person’s resultant displacement graphically.

9 A car is driven 125km west and then 65km south
A car is driven 125km west and then 65km south. What is the displacement of the car from the point of origin (magnitude and direction)? Draw a diagram.

10 A man walks 15 meters south then turns and walks 12 meters west
A man walks 15 meters south then turns and walks 12 meters west. Find the resultant displacement graphically.

11 A bird flies north 3. 0km and then south 4. 0km
A bird flies north 3.0km and then south 4.0km. What is the resultant displacement of the bird?

12 Do Now A person runs 125meters south, and then 75meters west. Find magnitude and direction of the person’s resultant displacement graphically.

13 A person walks 5. 0 meters due east and 12
A person walks 5.0 meters due east and 12.0 meters at 60° north of east. Find the magnitude and direction of the person’s resultant displacement graphically.
