4 Career Beginnings During the Great Depression, U.S. Bureau of Fisheries hired Rachel to write radio scripts. Carson worked for 15 years in the federal service as a scientist and editor in 1936. Eventually, she became Editor-in-chief for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.
