Importance of Web-Based Technology – Total Sample The charts below detail the amount of importance assigned to web-based technology over the past three waves of tracking: As previously seen, the level of importance has increased significantly to its highest level ever (47% to 57%). Very small minorities (11% to 17%) indicate that they are not interested in web-based and instructional technology. Extremely Important 26% Somewhat 32% Not At All 2% Very 31% Not Very 9% 2002 (N=1177) Q.13a How important is your use of technology and web resources in helping you achieve your teaching objectives? 2 C hallenges Related To Integrating Technology Total Sample (N=1177) Teachers continue to require very specialized assistance to integrate technology – they want to know what is available and what works (effective); they also require more development and learning time. Implementation is a secondary challenge -- which is reflected in the need for ready-to-use technology and help in using and integrating technology. Access to basic software and hardware and basic technical has been surpassed by more specialized types of support. Challenges To Integrate Technology Slide 59 on Original

Sources of Web Content – Total Sample Teachers also use a variety of web sources – with web sites being the number one selection: Text publishers’ sites and self-created materials are secondary choices. Use of all of these content sources has increased significantly in the past year. Sources of Web Content Slide 46 on Original

Sources of Information About Web- Based Technology Total Sample (N=1177) Colleagues continue to be the most predominant source of information for teachers (69%) – out of a total of nine possible sources: Conferences and seminars are second most popular. Most of the other sources are about equally used – from campus tech centres to campus teaching centres (21% to 23%). Sources of Information – 2002 Slide 44 on Original

Areas Where Technology Has A Positive Impact Total Sample To various degrees -- there is clear agreement among teachers that technology is having a positive impact notably in the following areas: Content-related – developing content and preparing assignments. Course delivery – optimizing course delivery. Student learning – better test scores; dealing with different learning styles; optimizing self- directed learning. 6 Positive Impact of Technology Related To Required Support - Total Sample In order to determine if technology is useful as well as impactful, an attempt was made to identify areas of positive impact where teachers also indicated they require more support -- helping to create useful assignments and improving learning in specific areas(e.g. better test scores and self- directed learning). AREAS OF POSITIVE IMPACT – RANK # AREAS WHERE SUPPORT IS REQUIRED – RANK # Preparing useful/relevant assignments4Relevant/useful assignments3 Student learning (i.e. test scores)5Learning about teaching styles/ innovations5 Optimizing self-directed learning6Materials for self-directed learning7 Optimizing student participation7Increasing student participation2 There are some areas, however, where technology is having a positive effect but not necessarily responding to high priority needs – in the areas of curriculum development, course delivery and having a better understanding of student learning. 7 Participation In Training/Professional Development & Online Training -- Total Sample (N=1177) Survey participants, for the most part, reported taking some type of training in the past year – 75% among total teachers and 66% to 87% among the various subgroups: But it is felt that a fairly broad range of activities was included in this definition. To quote one respondent: “Classroom management, native culture, evaluation techniques, student responsibility for learning”. An active interest in online training was also evident – about a quarter (23%) have already tried this type of training with another 34% displaying a strong interest in this type endeavor. Have Already Participated 23% Extremely Interested 14% Very Interested 20% Somewhat Interested 25% Not At All Interested 5% Not Very Interested 13% Q.9 How interested would you be in participating in training and professional development activities which are offered online? Participated in Some Type of PD Activity In Past 12 Months (Any Type) Online Training Courses Slide 31 on Original

Areas Where More Training/PD Support is Required – Total Sample (N=1177) Teachers were also asked to identify areas where additional support would be required: Six of the top eight issues are primarily concerned with teaching and learning issues: critical thinking; student participation; student motivation; new teaching styles. Two of the top eight relate to learning/teaching materials – useful assignments and materials for self-directed learning. Work and lifestyle issues continue to be low priority – possibly reflecting an older age profile and a more mature target audience. Slide 32 on Original
