1 Heat Capacity of H 2 O Water has the second highest molar specific heat capacity of any known substance, after ammonia, which is a result of the extensive hydrogen bonding between its molecules. This unusual property allows water to moderate Earth's climate by buffering large fluctuations in temperature. Earth’s water bodies act as heat sinks by dissipating heat from the atmosphere and carrying it around the world via ocean currents.

2 This large heat capacity acts to buffer temperature changes in the atmosphere, while ocean circulation redistributes heat around the globe and influences regional climates.
